Just got home from my week and a half vacation in Florida. sorry to see I missed a great discussion about what got me into the audio world (home audio). I was serisouly contemplating a set of Electrostats this summer, and went around auditioning the Maggies, Martin Logans, The McIntosh Ribbons, and the brand new Nautilaus 801's. Finally the last pair I listened to proved to be my "reference pair" the Quad 989! Sonic perfection to my ears. My auditioning was mostly through Jazz and Ska (I love the brass) and covered mostly Vinyl, but did listen to some cd's. The Quads are just amazing, incredible speakers, and doesn't have the absense of a low end that many electrostas have (total electro, no dymnaic woofers inside or matching, like many company's do). Chris, you and I will have to get out and listen to them some day up at Speaker Shop. I hope they still have them, thye;ve got the $25,000 McIntoshs with the 25 1" tweets too. They're...interesting??? I can't find the Quad website, I have the brochure here somewhere. But here's a little info on it : ESL 989s
My 'budget' reference system is in the works at the moment. Dan's actually helping me with it. Of course, I'm doing mostly adire, since 1.) I'm biased and 2.) It's relatively cheap. All the cabinets and such will be made by me, since that's the only thing I can actually do right. Jeff
