Okay sweet. Hey does the way I set it sound safe enough? I had it on +6 on the headunit so I can never put it past that by accident.

    50-60% gain
    50% bass boost

I would lower the bass boost and rather raise the gain.

I would try to keep the bass boost at a max of 25%

Okay, I'll put the bass boosts on 0 and see how high the volts get with the gains at like 75%, then slowly turn up the bass boosts from there.

I looked in my headunit manual. It says I have 2V preouts. Is there a chance I could turn the gain up 100% (no bass boost) and not clip the amp? Someone told me most of the time with 5V preouts you shouldn't have the gain past 50%.

I have 2 volt preouts...My gain is always up pretty high but with no clipping.

Ranger likes having 1 volt preouts and having his gains set high for competing

    Alright, very strange but good...

I started from the beginning again. Turned the engine on, set the gains and bass boosts to 0, played a 70 Hz tone, used the DMM, and turned up the gains until I had matching 28.3's... well I didn't use the bass boosts at all and I got to 28.3 volts with the gains at 50-60%. Maybe my battery wasn't fully charged before or something.

Oh and I finished putting the tweeter in the passenger door flush mounted in the woodgrain and put the door panel back on. I'll take some pics.

lol it sounds great. My neighbors friend came over today. He said he had just gotten a system in his pathfinder. I told him to let me take a look. He had two 12" JL W1's in a sealed box (looked about 2- 2.5 cubes) and an alpine M450 amp powering them. I looked at the install. They used an 8 gauge tsunami amp kit. He said he bought the subs, box, and amp off a kid for $200. He said the shop charged him $125 for the amp kit/install. Of course I thought it was a ripoff lol. He started playing it and I have to admit, for a 400 watt amp and subs in a sealed box it was pretty freakin loud. There was a little distortion, but still. I told him he should think about getting a properly tuned ported box. Then I sat in his passenger seat and he started blasting it again.... plenty of bass....and no music. He had stock speakers and they were playing with so much distortion it was disgusting lol. He said the shop told him because he had a bose stereo system they couldn't hookup new speakers to it without putting in a new aftermarket headunit. Then we made our way over to my car. I'm not sure if my bass was louder. I think it was but it's hard to say. It was definitely clearer. But my highs blew him away. I put the volume on 40/40 and turned the subs off. It was screaming loud.... and ZERO distortion.

    Indeed.

My other neighbor just told me this rich bastard at our school with a titan is getting two L7's (I assume 12") and a kicker 1500.1...

His parents bought him a brand new titan, 22" chrome rims, flipout indash tv/dvd player and complete stereo (which got stolen like mine), and dual exhaust.

But he doesn't know how to do anything himself so you can bet the subs are going to be in a sealed or prefab ported box and have some crappy 4 gauge amp kit and plenty of electrical problems... probably a cap too.

I do want to try covering boxes in something different. I hate working with that felt carpet. No matter how close I cut it and superglue the seams I can't make them look perfect. Besides glassing, what else do people cover boxes with?

i've been brainstorming ideas on what to cover a box with lately and thought for my first box i want to bondo the whole box, doing what i need with it to make it perfectly smooth then primer then paint it with actual car paint. not that touch up BS and many layers of clear coat to give it that slightly transparent look when u look at an angle.

I want to paint it or spray it with something... but I want all screws/glue/uneven edges to be hidden like with the carpet.

I finished the drivers door today. I'm all done besides like 2 plastic screws I need to get for a couple loose panels under the dash. I'd like to replace my carpet eventually too. Mine has cigarette holes and stains from the last owner.

counter sink the screws...SANDING is your friend....sand down the uneven edges....then first use a light coat of primer...then a couple more coats...why??? cuz MDF soaks up a lot of paint before it will look good. Them sand that down a lil bit and smooth it out...then paint it whatever color you want.

Or you could just use one layer of sanding sealer and that will seal up the MDF...then one layer of primer then paint that bitch
