yep, that's the 'hot' (usually red) wire. you're doing nothing wrong. :)

i understand the picky part, i'm the same with my things. sounds like you came up with a pretty good solution. still not sure that would work thou.
less resistance=more current=more watts (compared to 4) remember to keep this in mind when getting any audio equipment, it can mess up your math...
