Alright, I have a 1993 Jeep Wrangler with a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder. I have problems getting it into first gear, and it will sort of grind into each gear. I can push the clutch in, and hold it for several seconds, and it will still kind of grind in a little bit. I was wondering if this would be just a clutch problem... or would it be a whole transmission problem. If this would be a clutch problem, how much should it run to have a new clutch put in.... Sorry for my ignorance....
When you first push it in does it drop right in gear, but when you hold it down it grinds? If so, I would guess your clutch Master Cylinder is bypassing. Dos the clutch slip durring hard acceleration and quick release of the clutch pedal? If not, it is not likely the clutch (although it is possible). If it grinds no matter what, look to see if the clutch is adjustable. Look under the dash, at the top of the clutch pedal. You will see a rod from the clutch master to the pedal. If the rod is threaded to the banjo fitting that attatches directly to the pedal, try adjusting the rod. Be aware, if it is adjustable there will be a jam not on the rod that will be VERY hard to start turning (they crank them down to avoid movement). Once you break the nut though, it should turn freely. If the clutch always causes a grind, and the rod is not adjustable, you likely need a clutch. Bad manual trannies will usually pop, or howl, or drop out of gear while driving. It doesn't sound to me like you need a trans.
There is no slipping at all. It will grind the same no matter how far the clutch is in. I will check to see if it is adjustable. If it is not, about how much should it cost to get a clutch installed... I got some quotes, and they seemed WAY to high...
6 hours, plus I would guess about $300 in parts, so figure $720 or so. also, check your tranny fluid. It may be low or just need changing.
