Hello all, I need help. I built a 3-sub ported box for my elemental Designs 9KV2's using the specs for the RE l-port box builder and talking with Alex from ED. I was original driving them with my Eclipse XA-1000 320x1 Sub Amp. I ws clipping at higher volumes. Since then I changed all my amps to JL, 500/1 for the subs and 300/4 for the mids. When I hooked up the new amps, the center of the three speakers was still burping heavy distortion! Even with the new JL. I switch backed to two Ed's in a ported enclosure and it sounds sick!!!!! Is it that I damaged the one speaker from the original clipping? The two work awesome on the JL but three no good. I am running to a 2.67 ohm load using three 4-Ohm DVC speakers, whats up?
Sounds like an intermittant voice coil issue. Or perhaps the tensile leads are shoting out together or on the frame of the driver. Those are the first things I would check out. Can you physically move the cone back and forth and NOT feel or hear any scraping or rubbing noises?
Could measure the coil resistance also to make sure, i think it's best to take it out of the enclosure so your not measuring the wire too. If they are dual 4 ohm say then the measurements should be just under 4 ohms for each coil. A new trick i learned thanks to this site! Will save me a lot of dough too buying used speakers, i bring my meter with me and measure on the spot, that way there is no problems. If i'm wrong i'm sure someone will be in to correct me! I've had more than my share of these kinds of problems but this little trick is a lifesaver.
Contact ED they were not answering on Friday. But I will check again with the and I will check the leads on monday to check the ohmage.
