Unhappy with new set-up

alpine subs are WAY overrated get a JL Audio or Image Dynamic also enclosure is key

 

Pull the type r out of the sealed box , and go ported. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 cuft and tuned to 30-35hz . Night and day difference my brother.

Your sound is 90% enclosure and only 10% product. The only difrrence between myself and Ramos is I would tune a little higher, around 38-40 Hz

 

40hz wouldn't be too bad. Just don't go any higher . The type r's like low tuning

 

I'd say ported tuned around what Ranger said...Ramos...have you heard a Type R in a box tuned around 38-40 or are you just goin by what you've heard it tuned to around 30-35.

Let me explain my reasoning. If the dawg is not happy with the way it hits, I think it has to do with not enough gain above flat responce. Even though the sealed box is small and we are getting some relative gain, its too high.

By using a ported box, around 2-2.5 cu. ft. (I would try go for half way) and a tuning around 38-40, that should put our gain around 50-60 Hz. The relative gain in the sealed box is higher and it rolls off sooner.

If I can get Thiele/Small parameters for the speaker I can generate exact numbers.

 

Yes sir, played with the r's 10", 12", and 15" in a wide variety of enclosures. From my experience they flat out suck in sealed enclosures.Ported is the way to go with the R's . We played with tuning for several months . Metering different tuning frequency's . We tried from 25hz ( way to low ) to 50hz ( way to high ) and the sweet spot was in the neighborhood of 30-40hz. Of course a lot has to do with the automobile itself. We were testing in a co workers civic.

There ya go , he didn't mention wether he had dual 2's or 4's. And how they are wired . Which could also be part of the problem.

Im also need to know the length of your truck, from the front windshield to the back windshield. And the inside width, driver window to passenger window.

 

Think you can do that for me too. I havent decided whcih subs yet so it will be a while. Right now im thinking about Infinity Reference. Do you like them?

 

Reference is a good speaker.

Yes I would and I would need the same info. Also if you drive something strange like a pickup, I will also need to know how much space I have available for the box.

I really like the Reference series speakers, they perform well, durable, and they sound good. We have had lots of luck with this speaker.

 

Your vehicle has a resonant frequency around 50 Hz. So what we need is a box with a natural peak around that frequency.

The box needs to have an internal volume of between 2.4 and 2.5 cu ft. We also need to have one 4-inch port 5-inches long.

If your using 3/4-inch MDF then a box with the outside dimensions of 26-Wide X 16-Deep X 14-Tall will get you there.

The port should be near the speaker (within 6-8-inches). I always use PVC for my ports.

 

The amp only has dual inputs for easier hookup of multiple woofers. You can wire each sub's coil in parallen then to one of the inputs on the amp...Then do the same for the other.

Building a ported box is not a pain in the but...Basically same design as a sealed but with a hole and a tube. What is so difficult about this?

 

You only need 1 more cu ft for two 12-woofers. So your outside dimensions should be 34-Wide X 17-Deep X 14-Tall. You will also need 2 4-inch ports. Both ports will need to be 8-inches long.

Nothing works better than a properly tune ported box. Please you really need to give this a try. If you can build a sealed box, you can do this. Like Aznboi3644 said "its just a sealed box with a hole in it".

One other thing, one woofer in a ported box will in most cases easily out perform two in a sealed box.
