I've got a 1997 Acura EL (basically a honda civic ex, I think) with an automatic transmission, and recently the CEL came on. I got my mechanic to check it, and they came up with transmission codes T7000 and T7022 (if I remember correctly) which they told me related to the transmission sensors. They said it meant either the sensors were not working properly, or that the transmission was not shifting properly for some reason. They changed the transmission fluid for me, and they said it was turning brown and had some particulates in it. When that CEL came on, I noticed that the car was hesitating. I'd stop at a light, and when it turned green and I pressed on the gas pedal, it would hesitate, and the car would jerk before it got into gear and move. After this happened, I started waiting a bit after letting go of the brake, to make sure that when I pressed the gas, it wouldn't jerk around again. It still happened occasionally though. The CEL came on twice before - they were engine codes, and my mechanic checked the spark plugs, drove it around, and basically couldn't find any problems with it. Another problem I noticed with the shifting is when I switch from Reverse gear to Drive. It would take a LONG time for the transmission to shift, before I could press the gas without having the car hesitate and jerk. This didn't happen before when I first got the car. Right now, the only thing is that they've cleared the codes, and flushed the tranny fluid. They didn't do anything else. I've kept on the oil changes, every 5k, and everything else is fine. Is this a common problem with civics? Is the diagnosis correct and my tranny is shot? They said it would cost around $2k (CAD) to do the rebuild and install - which they would do if the problem comes up again. I'm also wondering if it would be worth it to do a conversion to a manual stickshift since I'm getting transmission work done anyways.
I hate Honda's and I have no experance with their trannies but here is my 2 cents anyway SELL IT AND BUY A REAL CAR but seriously, with these new cars the trannies are normally electronic controled instead of hydrolic. This means that if a senors fails the car will shift funny. The tranny shop should be able to test the sensor to see if it is malfunctioning or not, if they cant they are more than likly what I call "R&R shops" meaning all they know how to do is "Remove and Replace" things. Thus they w\ill tell you your tranny is bad, Buy a Rebuilt one from the Parts house that probally comes with New Sensors anyway, and put that in when all you really need is a $20 sensor....... I would Get a 2nd Opinon
ohh and Changing the Oil is not the only thing you need to do, Follow the Manufacturer Recommendations for thaty stuff, Tranny Fluid should be Changed every so often (I change it ever 25K-30K on my Vechiles) some newer cars have scedules that allow for a longer term but you should follow the manufacters Specs
I've never changed the tranny fluid before... dunno what's involved, really. I don't even know when it was changed last - though it was my cousin's car before he gave it to me. They said that to get at the sensors is not easy at all... plus the fluid didn't look all too good when it came out. I trust my mechanic, as he's a family friend - and he's done good jobs on all of our other cars, including installing the rebuilt engine in my dad's car. I didn't have a chance to talk to him, as he was sick at the time and left work early. He worked on the car, jotted a few notes down about it, and left it for the other junior mechanic to tell me about it when I went to pick it up. btw, the car has over 120,000km on it...
I never change my own fluid... NEVER and I have a fair amount of experance. Too much pf a pain and it can be messsy depending on the car as most cars have no drain plugs in the pans (never understood that never) shops have specialzed devices that will suck the fliud out. Even if you drain it you can only get about 1/3-1/2 of the fluid since the torque converter holds a great deal of fliud, the machines get all of that. Being it has 120K and more than likly has never gotten the fluid changed (often forgetten in cars) the tranny probally does need to be rebuild now or in the very near furture.
Shiat.... was hoping to not have to change it. Know what a manual conversion will cost on this car? My friend estimates it to total about $3k cad..... Was hoping to get Seth's opinion on this matter... where's he been?
I have no Idea on both questions Seth has not logged on since 12/26/2004 I have not seen/heard from him since. Geo I know talked to him a few week ago and he said he was going to be getting online but never did, I dont know if he is just really busy or what
If it's an automatic - as much as automatics are 'against my religion' P) - leave it an automatic. Honda or not (they do tend to make one version of something - ie. body stamping, which would theoretically make this easier than with other brands), it's still very very involved... it's no bolt-on affair.
Hah... yeah, I know it's not a "bolt-on affair", as I've read what's involved. But hey, I'm stuck with the car, and if I need a new tranny anyways...... Regardless, I don't have the $$$ to fork out right now for a replacement nor a conversion...
I know how that Goes, Thank god my parents have Credit out the wazoo (my dad has a Limit on his cards that exceed $75,000 :jawdrop: and all of them are 7%apr or UNDER :jawdrop: ) or I would have never gotten the tranny in my Truck replaced
