Hey, I'm going to attempt to fix one of these amps, one amp has two transistors clearly blown, does anyone know if this usually means that there are some burnt resisters and diodes also? Will have to remember the color codes again for resistors. Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge? lol or something like that! Wish me luck!

    Your pic isnt showing up!!!

Generally speaking, if you have blown transistors, you will also have other things that are toast too, but not visibly. You may get lucky and change out the blown parts and it will work fine, but i doubt it. Transistors can blow for many reasons, such as overcurrent, over voltage, shorted out, etc.....

I have repaired a few amps over the years, but that was with the help of a tech from Orion ( I used to know "people" ) I learned a bit from him. Unless you have the right test equipment, you are shootin in the dark buddy!

But hey, go for it!!!!!! Good Luck!!!!

It was still working when i pulled it out, but had to bang it lol then it would work for a while then cut out again on a bump.

Actually it probably fried when the so called stereo shop installed my 4 gauge kit and fried the kicker l7 i had. I smelled burning wire or electronics big time. So if my amp blew two transistors because of a short...

Pic not showing up? will try again, it shows on mine.

Check for cold solder joints. Transistors (semi conductors) dont intermit. They work or they dont. No inbetween. Cold solder joints are easy to spot, looks like a ring around the soldered connection.

I did not see it in the link you provided, but transistors must be tested out of circuit. Transistors will always test bad in circuit because they have bias resistors and other components attached to them.

Now is the problem in the power supply or the outputs. Set your volt meter to a 200-volt scale, power up the amp, and test the center pin on the output transistors. Let me know what the voltages are and I can tell you where to go from there.

Hey Ranger, long time no speak lol.. I have it apart and there is one transistor cracked in half then two beside it are blackened from being burnt, also two transistors on the other side are black and burnt, only a few resistors around that area, i guess they are burnt too. I knew that shop i went to screwed me good. They bolted that amp to the back of my kicker box, all four corners of the amp screwed down tight and a big thick wire running underneath the amp causing it to bend and crack that transistor. Will put pics soon, just waiting for batteries to charge.

Lol, now that i think about it that probably fried my kicker L7? It was working good along with the amp until i went to get the 4 gauge wire at that stupid shop.

The first 2 pics are of the 1st amp, looks like only one burnt, the last pics are the second amp, looks like 5 are gone. Maybe better to try the first amp, just it was a litlle more abused, heated up.

lol am sure it does but if i start using those functions or the live screen the camera will die in seconds.

I had power on both amps, one would automatically go into protection, the other was working but i had to bang it to make it work and it would work until the next bang or bump. I have to find my meter now, it's around somewhere. Will check for broken circuits.

no no the macro is a setting.not like turning the screen on.it looks like a little flower.is usually near the flash setting.

He is right and those are not "exactly" transistors. They are MOSFETs (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor). They dont test the same as a typical transistor. Anyway if one is bad you can assume the rest are also.

While MOSFETS can handle extreme amounts of current and voltages and heat, they do not handle shorts very well.

One of two things happened, the output tansistors shorted or one or two of the bias resistors shorted taking out the MOSFETS. Make that three things, the Bridge Rectifiers could have shorted, that will take out a MOSFET Quick. They look like transistors except insted of part #'s they have diode symbols on them. They will be located between the MOSFETS and the output Transistors.

If you decide to fix it, replace all the MOSFETS. Check all resistors and make sure none are open or shorted. All the power supply caps are OK. Any way the amp is dead so take advantage of it, its now a learning experience

Location of the Bridge Rectifiers, this should be right. There will be another pair on the other side.
