One of my neighbors has 2 kicker l7 12's in a ported box. He's powering them with a kicker zx1500.Now the problem is that certain songs makes the bass cut out,I've tweaked and regrounded and nothing has gotten rid of the problem.I'm wondering if his box is too small. It's only(by the outside dimmensions)3.5cubes.Once you add in a high tune and sub disp. I don't think they are getting 1.5 each. Now looking them up I've learned that kicker recommends 1.75-3.25cubes each.Could this be what the problem is?
It is possible, but do you mean that it completely shuts off or does it get very weak? A symptom of a box that is too small, tuned low, is that lower frequencies cannot be produced. When a box is too small the tuning becomes higher. Very high, regardless of how the port is tuned. Remember, port tuning effects gain, it has very little to do with how low it goes. With that said, if we have a TOO small box its tuning frequency is pretty high. Lets say 75 Hz. Now we tune the port to 30 Hz, now we have beyond bad. What we have is a box thats tuned too high and we have no gain at all. NO Low Frequencies Now going from 1.75 recommended minimum to 1.5 should not be that servere. But going from 1.75 minimum to 1-1.25 might be. I have dealt with Kicker L7 and they do like air space, and remember, port area is NOT part of the air space Also if the sound seems to be shutting off, check the amp. Is the sub-sonic filter on??
We tried it with the sub sonic filter and w/o,same results. He has a 200 amp alt,0/1 gauge wire and a digital read out cap.His volts are not dropping to much and the amp goes into protect when the bass cuts out.He for sure has less than 1.5 per sub,but I measured it a couple months ago and I don't remember the specs.Like I said,it's only certain songs and only a couple of songs do it.I'm guessing by the thin ports that it's tuned high like 38-46hz.That's just a guess though.I had a box laying around for him to try,but it wasn't pretty enough for him.So basically I'm just looking to learn for future reference. Thanks for the input Ranger.
Too small of a box will NOT cause an amp to shut down or the sound to cut out. If it happens on certain songs...dont play those songs....LOL! You have issues that seem to be in the realm of current delivery to the amp. For the time being....disconnect the cap....make SURE the amps ground is done RIGHT. Clean metal with a bolt and nut.. If the box is wrong. the impedance could change in such a way that causes issues....but i have NEVER seen that Check your voltage and electrical.......thats my bet.
I'm not for sure what they're wired at.The guy wouldn't let me pull a sub to find out and he said there's no way he'll allow the cap to be unhooked.I don't think he wants real help,I think he's just ****ed off and likes to bitch.I mean,I tried to help him but he doesn't want to listen.I'm just wondering for future reference thanks.
