i have an amp with 720wrms and i'm looking at getting a 15" sub for $150 or less. the tempest looks like a great pick. but i've heard it can't mechanically handle 720wrms. should i give it a small ported box, so it won't blow? if i do, would it still be able to "tune" to 20-25hz?

Depending on the box you put it in it will handle that much power. I personally have ran over 2000 rms to one tempest.

ya...whoever told you that was a halfwit...

Myself...i've choked one with over 1500 ....still wangin to this day...

I'm pretty sure nobody has beaten on those woofers more than i have...

They can take it...just build the box properly...

I think you are looking at it wrong. Don't think of it as not being able to handle that power, but not needing that power.

so it can take the power if i build the box right? how do i build the box right? i'm a newb

exactly, once you get to a certin point, your just adding heat, and not gettting any more sound,

but the tempest is rated for 750w rms, so no 750 would not be over powering it,

also. like witn any subwoofer, that rating is THERMAL, not mechincal. box size in the detriming factor

What type of amp is the 720 coming from....just curious...might not really be 720 watts

uh the amp is a Kole hk1440-2...

2channel amp (tehy say max is 1440 watts)
    300@4ohmsx2
    360@2ohmsx2
    720bridged

ok so the box size is the detirmining factor? i was looking at a sealed box tuned pretty low.. how do i know how big to make it. also, from visionary forums under adire products. they say the magic box is 4ft ported... what do you suggest?

    This is really precisely it...

If you are looking to tune it THAT low (20hz), have you considered simply running it in a sealed enclosure?

Although, it will mechanically handle more power, in the ported enclosure, particularly running it tuned quite low (20hz-25hz).

What sort of sound quality, and output level are you looking for?
What kind of musical tendencies do you have?

    oop, I didn't scroll far enough, I guess, before I replied... :p

You don't really "tune" a sealed enclosure.
You can manipulate the size of a sealed enclosure, to manipulate the frequency response shape, the damping properties, and the efficiency of the subwoofer...
But you don't "tune" it, like with a ported enclosure.

With a sealed enclosure, as you increase your enclosure size, you:
    * Increase the damping properties of the sub
    * Increaes the low-frequency capabilities of the sub
    * Increase the efficiency of the sub (same output levels on less power)

With a ported enclosure, you incorporate a port... which has a given port size, and length...
When you manipulate the size and length, you "tune" the enclosure to resonate at a given frequency...
If tuned low, the port can be used to extend the response lower.
If tuned high, the port can be used to create a big peak in the response, boosting SPL around that peak.

If SQ is your primary goal, the sealed box is probably your best bet, as it has a gently sloping roll-off that typically combines in a complimentary way with your car's cabin-gain, yielding a nice-flat in-car frequency response.

Oh, and if power is a concern, you can always artificially throttle-back the amp, by running the gain control even lower than you technically might need it.
But I really don't think you'll have a problem, even with the full 720w.

thanks for your help.. i went ahead and ordered a tempest. and decided to go with the 4'cubed with the 12" vent (4'diam). with the gain setting lowered.. i think it will be fine... thank you for telling me the full 720 won't be a problem! i was tired of CAF... they all told me different things... i think that's just a newb forum compared to here..

Well, this is a good forum, I agree there! :D

There are good and bad things with a forum as big as CAF...
    Both related to traffic.

Things move very quickly there, that's good.

But in the same sense, with so many hands in the pot, odd stuff is bound to sometimes get added and stirred up...

What was said over there that didn't seem right to you, btw?

there isn't one particular thing that i recall, but many times things were said that even i knew were wrong, from people that esteemed themselves highly.

there is only one things you need to remember, what I say is Correct, anyone that disagrees is wrong.....

    Remeber that, and if you disagree, well............. your wrong too :p :p :p :p :p :p :p
