I pulled into my garage last night and up against the wall I saw a roll of landscape fabric sitting there.....and I wondered.......

Would this type of material be suited to use as mat when doing fiberglass??

I know it is pretty strong and it is made to allow water and moisture to go through it into the ground....it is cheap and easy to get.....

After I saw that Ranger used "T" shirts on projects, I was just wondering what else could be used.....It just hit me as I pulled into the garage last night....

From what I gather, this is the process (basically) if you want to build something and make it fiberglass...Take the area you wish to put the enlcoure in and make a mold of it..Lay down tape of aluminum foil in that area and extend that beyond where you want the edges to stop....maybe draw a line with marker where you want the edge to be....Cover all other areas that you want to protect from the mess of resin.....Put a coating of resin and mat material down covering the surface.....Do this over and over again making several layers.....Let it dry.....Pop the mold out of the area to complete it. (use a mold release wax so the fiberglass will separate from the tape or foil)

Take MDF and make a ring for the driver(s) to sit in....Place that in the area you want and make a structure to hold it temporarily with dowel rods, mdf, etc....Once the framework is set up, stretch mat (or other suitable material) over the surface and begin adding layers of fiberglass resin, mat and repeat untill you get it all done....Use body filler to smooth out everything to the final shape and then cover with material or paint.....

Is this about the jist of it....basically??

Yeah that is the jist of it...but that weed matting won't work worth crap...its plastic. It won't be nearly as strong as actual fiberglass

I agree with Azn.....the resin will not soak into and penetrate (huh huh, i said, "penetrate" ) the mat, it would make for a weak structure, I dont reccomend it.

i agree. but trunkliner works but you have to be able to get to both sides.
