Hey i have got a stock system and am looking for a bit more sound quality. At the moment there is distortion when i turn up the volume and i dont get a lot of bass. I have 4 speakers in the doors and space for 2 6.9 under the rear window. I have trying to work out how to get a bit more sound and bass, also i am iffy about geting a sub cause i have a gas tank in the boot and dont have much space left.
So the ideas i have is that i change my current speakers for high quality 6 with tweeters and put in 2 6x9 at the rear with an amp in there somewhere. Would this give me desent increase in sound and bass or would it be a waste of money.

Does any one have any suggestions of a desent (not massively over the top) system? and a way to get around the lack of boot space for a sub?

in most cases just replacing your stock speakers will give you much better sound quality, but really you are getting distortion cause you dont have enough power. What kind of car do you have, just wodering if you have room for some small amplifiers (Alpine PDX). As for your bass problem, i had really good luck with a Bazooka tube. I got a 10 incher off ebay for like 50 bucks, ripped out the cheezy woofer and installed a kicker CVR dual 2 ohm coil wired to 1 ohm. For a 10 inch woofer it was very impressive. I think someone else here had good luck with them as well, i think maybe it was Pedro but I can be wrong. Also how much do you want to spend?

you can add a sub or two in the space you have for those 6x9's, or i know parts express sells 6x9 in subs.

elemental designs sells a 6 in sub for $40 bucks. you could mount them in an infinite baffle design; using the trunk as the enclosure.

google IB or infinite baffe for cars to get an idea.

I have been to a car audio shop and they suggested a slim line sub.. What are peoples opinions of slimline subs? I mean are they a complete waste of money or will they provide satisfactory bass for in the car, im not interested if the car next to me can hear it or if i can hear it around the corner just if they are good for my listening in the car?
But he also suggested that if i get really high quality front speakers (he recommended focal at about $300 Aus) and then 2 6x9 alpines at the back and a alpine head unit i would get a massive difference alone and then later could add in sub and amp if i feel the need. He said that the head unit and front two speakers would be the most important place for me to spend the money. Does that sound right?

my current system is a stock Holden Commodore VT system so i assume any change will be good.

he's right, get the deck and front two speakers first, but you do not need to spend a ton of money on your front speakers.

im sure a pair of JBL's,or Polk's can sound just as good for much less. (those two are what came to mind first)

there are plenty of other brands out there with good sound. if you can go around town and take a listen to anything and everything you can.

Go with a sub and a mono block amp...

If you shop around you can find a 300watt 2ohm mono from 100, then one single 2ohm sub in a box 100-300..... Of course sub price also depends on 10-12 or 15" prference.

AMP AND SUB!! No 6x9 you wont really add that much base..

Some companies make great slim line subs. Jbl did or still does make a slim line 12" that took like 1.2 cu ft of space, WOW!! Only problem was it took 1000rms!!! No 300 watt or even 600 watt amp was gonna push that thing. Anyway, I still seem slim line subs, but most are high end and for some reason are real poweer hungry 600+ watts..

The best slimline sub on the market is the JL Audio TW5, a 13.5" sub with a mounting depth of only 2.5". But I'd recommend it only if you've got bucks and no space. It will put out more bass than most good 10" deep subs. JL says it's output is about equal to their own 10W6, which is an impressive sub. However, these things are like $550 each and need about 500 watts RMS to sound great.

You sound like you might be in about the same situation as I. I'm a bit past building custom $5000 systems in my car. I don't spend that much time in it and don't want to occupy all my trunk. My car also has 6x9s and 6-1/2s. I'm going very budget and I'm not adding a sub. I'm putting a 4-channel amp on those speakers and calling it a day. You can actually get nice sound from such a setup. You can improve it by adding some DynaMat or HushMatt sound deadening material to your rear deck and doors. Here's an example of what I'm putting in:

    Head Unit

    JVC KW-XR810 ($139 w/kit & harness)

    Amplifier

    Soundstream DTR4.300 50x4 ($86.99)

    Rear Speakers

    Lanzar VB69.2 ($40.88 pr.)

I already have some Infinity Reference 6-1/2s in the front but they're getting old so I may replace them. They were about $50. So even with shipping, I'm spending a whopping $350 for my entire system.

Hope this gives you some encouragement.
