System for '85 Golf (Help Needed.)

Well I hate to make this extremely newbish thread but...

I have almost no knowledge of car audio and am attempting to broaden my knowledge. I'm looking to build a system that is not ridiculously expensive but not junk either.

I would rather buy nothing than buy something that will plague me with issues.

I have an 85 VW Golf Hatch Back. It has a large amount of trunk space and two shelf things on either side of the trunk housing two **** speakers currently.

My goal is to have two nice speakers and two? decent subs. Other than that i'm rather lost. (As far as tweeters, amps, wiring, boxes, and so on.) I listen to a lot of bass heavy stuff and would like an obnoxiously loud bass but I also listen to other music so i'd like that to sound good too. If there's any advice you'd like to pass on that'd be great.

    Total System budget $1000.

Note: I will probably have to buy piece by piece over a month or two due to monetary issues. So i'll probablly start with... Head unit-> speakers...and so on.

    thanks

Welcome. Ask any questions you like, that's what were here for.

First you want to start off with a good head unit. I'd go with a pioneer, have a look on the following sites and tell us what you like and we can tell you if there are good or not.

    sonicelectronix.com
    woofersetc.com

always have a look on ebay to compare prices, you can usually find them cheaper there. Now, with a head unit you want to make sure it had decent preouts for the amps. 4 volts and up is what you will want to look for the RCA pre outs.

Now, i took a look at you car for what kind of component speakers you should be getting. Please confirm this if it's correct or not. According to crutchfield.com you car has the following speakers:

    Front speakers
    Dash: 3-1/2"
    Front Door: 5-1/4"
    Rear speakers
    Side Panel: 4x6"

what i would be looking for is some good 5 1/4" component speakers, these type of speakers come with mid bass speakers, tweeters and crossovers. You should spend good money for these because they are very important. you don't want to have loud bass and the vocals being very weak. Component speakers will be placed in the front doors, this is where you want the good sound coming from. for the 4x6 speakers just pick a decent brand and you won't even have to put an amp to these speakers, you can just run them off of the head unit.

As for the brands you should choose, it is always best to go to some car audio shops and listen there to see what really suits you. If you are going to ask me what brands i would lean towards then I would say look at the following:

    Focal
    DLS
    Polk

As far as amps and subs go, I would really suggest you take a look at elemental designs. Great warranties (5 years) and they are underrated amps so they put out more power then they claim.

If you have any more questions, just ask away...

maybe you could get the db series components from polk instead and get eD amps and subs. its all up to you though dude. Ask all the questions you want, we love them all!

Thank you both for your replies. As far as I can tell from my current speaker setup there are no in door speaker holes and i'm not sure about the in dash ones. I suppose those could exist. I'm currently in bed but I will investigate in the morning and attempt to confirm all this info.

I do know that the only speakers (pics will come tomorrow) installed are some crap radioshack brand things. they are in the trunk projecting upwards just below the trunks side windows. The wires connected to my aftermarket tape deck (previous owner) had all but those two speaker wires capped off.

I think you should understand that I plan on putting 1000 dollars worth of speaker equipment in a $600 car. Don't get me wrong. I love my car to death but it often acts unexpectedly. (missing speaker holes) haha.

The only thing I can specifically say that I want, is a head unit with not a lot of flashing lights and glitter. I would like it to be high quality but real subtle in appearance.

Alright I determined that there are indeed front door speakers and dash speakers. 2 of each.

Pioners use warm colors and aren't excessive. Polks have a bright warm sound and sound great at any volume. Take everything everyone has suggested and add some sound deadening to the list. It will make your subs and speakers louder and sound better. It also helps with road noise and vibrations throughout the car.

LOL Welcome to the boards Vw, you got alot of options to chose from with a budget like that, i know my whole system was about $1200 all together, its just not fully installed yet, been too cold. a couple components up front with a small powered amp might help bring out the full range, considering that with a hatchback that small if your going to use two subs your going to be engolfed with low tones. you should try and size up the front speaker mountings that are availab le and see where you can go from there.

I do want some heavy bass but obviously you're right I do not want for that to be the only sound. Do you think you might be able to suggest a more balanced system? Maybe just the one twelve inch sub plus the components? Perhaps a 15" Sub? I have no idea.

2 10's or 1 12 in a properly built enclosure can sound really good and loud off of only a few hundred watts (3~400).

unless you can give up the hatch, and your car can support the electrical demands of what a hi powered sub needs...

its worth a try.... cause you are saving a good amount at 500 already because 650 is without shipping and possible tax... they should go for 450 people on craigslist are flexible... i've heard an older model of those alpines and they sound really good.

if he gets some decent brands, he can get a lot more than that for about the same amount. I remember I bought my front stage amp for $200 shipped, i got it used but the guy i bought it from never even used it. I bought my DLS for about $200. That is some good stuff and it was for $400 shipped.

You could find another amp, and get some Phoenix gold RSD's which are only like $75. Even if you spend $200 for a decent amp you're still coming out a lot cheaper than the $500.

I hear you on that but this stuff is all brand new in the box too. Also I understand a lot could be had for cheaper but I don't mind spending the money if it results in a nicer product/quality.

Thats apretty good deal, iam a craigslist fan myself, just dont get burned lol, if its all in the box then you should be good, and always give a little cut to it, people are usually willing to bend a bit on a price, ide offer him 450 then see if he takes. those will make for some great fill in the front of a golf, size wise it will be a good match with a nice sub on low end RMS

The guy with the alpines fell through so I've continued my search. I found this sub on craigslist and it will include a box and amp. This guy seems knowledgeable and seems to think the sub may pair nicely with some pioneer components. Any opinions on the SHOCKER series?
