Hi, I purchased a sub woofer about 2 months ago and had it fitted using a how low converter into the rear speaker wire. The sound from the sub sounded quite distorted and my friend has the same sub in his corsa and his sounds a lot louder. I bought a new head unit and this made it better as in a lot clearer sound and the sub is currently plugged into the back of the head unit but the sub doesn't seem to be anywhere near as loud as it should be, it is working but when i go in my friends his is about 3 times louder and its the same sub, so just wondering if anyone had any ideas why this would happen? the only thing difference between mine and his is the rca cable but not sure if this would make a difference?

    What amp are you using?
Is the box the same size?
Is the box sealed or ported?
    What car is yours in?
Do you have the levels set correctly?

I have a Edge 900w active sub so the amp is built in. So the box etc are exactly how they came still. The car is a ford fiesta 05 I have the rca cables plugged into the head unit at the moment, but it was louder when it was connected to the speaker wire at the back althought the sound was quite distorted when it was wired like that.

I have the gain and bass boost on max at the moment as if i turn them down i can hear hardly any bass. If i turn the bass up on the head unit then the speakers distort so I am a bit stuck at the moment lol

Have you switched your sub with your friends to see if it is louder in his car?

Where do you have the amp grounded? You need a good ground for the amp to work properly.

Head units will make a differece as well.

Hi yes I have switched and they are the same i.e. louder in his and quieter in mine. The amp is grounded under the back seats to a bolt. His head unit is standard. I was thinking it was either this or the RCA cables but not sure if they make a difference. Will ground change how loud the sound can be then I thought a bad ground just wouldn't switch the amp on? thanks for the help

If you do not have a good ground you will have resistance which will cause the amp not to run at 100%. I would also check the power lead to the amp and see if it is getting enough voltage. If not check your connection at the battery to see it is loose or coroded. The size of the power lead wire is also important. You need a true 8 gauge wire.

I have seen a lot of cheap wire advertised as 8 gauge when it is closer to 6 or 10 gauge.

OK thanks yeah the wire is true 8, i will check the ground and maybe try somewhere else then. Ill test the power also thanks for your help
