i was in a heated talk with a customer , on how important the subwoofer enclousre is. can anyone give me more solid info on how inportant that is meaning the cu ft like some are 1.25 cu ft per sub and some are 2.0cu ft per sub and more, that say that is not much of a to make a different sound or sound better.or even deeper bass. it is the eq and amp that will do the power.

    thanks

i agree with jerry. set up one sub in a generic ported box and one in a custom exact spec ported. run on the same amp same gain same song. he will cry.

But unfortunately, calling customers "stupid" is not a good way to keep them. If only you knew how many times I have to bite my Tongue.

If you've tried your best and failed, then my motto becomes "sell them what they want not what they need".

that was more rhetorical than anything, ranger.. I understand that many of you do this stuff for a living, and must at all costs keep a professional attitude, but tell me who (goes into a shop and argues with a professional?) - this guy is an idiot.. unless you are in that minute percentage of the population who actually knows more than the professionals that are trying to serve you. people like that are out there, but based on the premise of this conversation, this guy is most definitely not in that percentage..

And what kind of a salesman are you, xl, that you are not trying to talk the customer into buying a bigger amp, and a more expensive subwoofer to please his little ego? (that was sarcasm ranger) At this point xl is trying to do this customer a favor by letting him in on something that we all know, but that the overwhelming majority of audio customers do not- the importance of the enclosure.

ranger is correct in saying give him what he wants, and not what he needs.. some people are unwilling to learn, but very willing to spend. we see that all the time here. for example, the guy that comes here on his first post and says -" I have two jackhammers and 35 brutus amps, but I want a $25 dollar premade enclosure because it fits my trunk and I don't like to build stuff myself" (note.... more sarcasm, not an actual quote)- and this guy (despite our protests) will walk away from his computer convinced that he will buy that prefab and it will work great, because that was what he had in mind when he came to our site, or his friend up the street told him that a buddy had one and it sounded awesome. Some customers are in exactly that mindset, and you cannot stray them from thier own ignorance.

xl.. I'm guessing that you work at a branch of a chain store, like CC, or best buy or something.. so you know right off the bat what kind of an "audiphile" this guy is..

let him spend daddy's money, sell him what he wants and make him happy.

Then, your job as a customer servant becomes proving to this guy that he is a moron without actually saying so.
I'm sure that someone will let him know sooner or later.
and you get the satisfaction of knowing that.

About half my customers are uneducated high school drop outs. They are not capable of reasoning or even thinking. And they all "know more than me". Most of these people actually think that if they replace their $250 woofer with a $500 woofer, their system will be twice as loud.

I put up with that on a regular basis.

Maybe if crack hasnt fried their brains so bad I might convince them that the box is much more important than the woofer. But its a lost cause.

Oh almost forgot, I am not a salesman, I am an installer. The only time I go to the front is to get equipment, find car keys, and when I leave in the evening.

but more the air for a sub to breath the better based on the specs. does the foam make a sub see a bigger or smaller?

To a point I like larger boxes, but we can get carried away So tread lightly here. Stuffing does help, Theoretically (did I spell that right, wheres AZN when I need him) we can see up to a 15% gain, realistically we are probably much closer to 5-10%.

If you have a generic prefab 2 chamber box for 10's or 12's you can make them sound much better. Use a hole saw and cut a 3 or 4-inch hole in the divider. IT REALLY WORKS. We do it to our Bass Specials all the time.
