I'm currently running 1 12 inch JBL sub at 1ohm 300rms and it sounds good but I want more! I was thinking of adding another 12inch sub but I thought that I could maybe add 2 10" subs instead. Do having subs of different sizes running together create a problem with sound?

For example, would running my existing 12" sub with two 10" subs create some kind of distortion? Would I be better off just adding another 12"?

Or even better, Should I add another 12" AND two 10" subs for a total of 4 subs?

You never want to mix subs of different sizes, different brands, different impedances... nothing. Always keep them the same.

The reason is, you can never get the "best of both sizes". You always get the worst of both. In other words, if one sub shined in one area, and another sub shined in another area, what would happen is the sub that doesn't shine in that area would reach it's limits first - very audibly - and you'd stop turning the volume up long before the sub that shined in that area would be anywhere near it's capability. It would be a waste of both subs...

The only subs that can compliment each other are subs that are clones of one another.

And, if you don't like how they sound, there's a massive amount of things you can do to modify the enclosure they are in to change where/how they hit, what their frequency response is, how efficient they are, etc.

But never, never mix subs in any way.
