Sub randomly shut off

I'll start off by explaining my set up. I have a 4g wire running from my car battery to my trunk. Then It runs into the capacitor, which is grounded using a noter 4g wire. Then the power wire runs into a splitter which breaks it down into 2 8g wires and includes a fuse for each wire. One runs into an Inifinity Kappa four amp powering 4 interior speakers (have always worked fine). The other runs into a new Infinity Kappa one amp. All amps are grounded with a 8g wire to the frame of my car which has the paint sanded down and used dielectric grease to make sure it's grounded securly. The kappa one is powering one 12" Kicker Comp VR sub at 4ohms. The specs of the sub run at 400w rms and 800 max. The amp puts out 500w rms and 1600w max. So in theory everything should we running fine, but when I try to turn it up the sub goes quiet. The only thing that I can think of is I am overpowering it. I'm in the process of getting 2 kappa 120.9w subs, but they won't be here for another week, so until then I am using my old Kicker sub.

So I have a few questions here...
Why might my sub stop working?
Is it bad to continue using this set up with it occasionally shutting off? (I turn it down and it powers right back up)
Can I hook up my second kicker sub to this new amp and not harm the amp? (keeping in mind the impedance)

Any help here would be Appreciated. I'm leaving on a road trip this evening and want the most out of my system while I'm gone.

you could be putting to much power to your amp. Your amp could also be overheating. You amp actually is shutting off not your subs stopping. You need to check all your fuses and wires. Then you need to check your amp. Have someone else mess with the volume and u watch the amp. You can see it shut off or have the overheat light on. I would check the wiring first, then do all the fuses, and then watch the amp. You could be jiggling a wire lose with the volume up or a fuse could be bad. In my opinion though it is the amp is shutting off.

u need bigger power wire... try running the 4 guage directly into the sub amp and see if it still shuts off when u turn it up :)

I had the same problem, my sub kept dying but it was the amp that was turning off. the fuse inline with the power cable near the battery went bad from playing the sub too loud
