    Hi,
I am looking for a stereo for a caterpillar motorgrader and was hoping I could get some recomendations for a simple rugged system.

It needs some kick to it, I wear hearing protection while running the machine.

I would like to listen to mp3 podcasts. Would flash usb be easiest?
Or just plug in my mp3 player?

It would be nice if the speakers were wedge shaped like for a back window, there is a place where they fit nice.

One downer is the system is 24 volt, I have a 24v to 12v voltage converter to cover that.
The other downer is the shut off key disconnects the ground completely on this machine. So I will lose all presets whenever I park the machine overnight.

    Thanks for any ideas,

    Kent

why not just a pair of hearing protection/headphones that will alow you to plug in an mp3/ipod/fm radio.

it beats worrying about someone stealing a radio and you may not be able to hear the speakers anyways using your hearing protection alone.

    like this ..kinda http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/woramsterhea.html

pedro has a good point there and his recommendation is a very good one. Putting a stereo in a cat seems like you'll be asking for somebody to steal it especially if it's left on a job site..

Are their speakers in the cat? If you really to get a stereo then any of the decent brands would be ok like pioneer, alpine, kenwood etc. For the MP3 player just make sure that the stereo it has an AUX IN and you should be fine.

I've got a set of speakers in the cat, some old radio shack wedges.
    A buddy gave me like a 1980 pioneer cassette/fm I've been using.
The speakers are shot. But heck the systems been in there 8 or 9 years.
I can hear the stereo through the foam earplugs (33dp reduction), with it turned up. Distortion sucks through ear plugs to. :D
Would like to upgrade to something with am, fm, aux in, maybe weather band, and maybe usb.
Simple controls that can be worked with gloves would be a plus.
Have been looking at different name brand units, trying to make sure what I get can go loud.
Is using a usb flash that I load with podcasts and plug into the unit, or aux in with an mp3 player the easiest?

    Thanks

Ayo when I work with powertools and what not I just put skull candy ear buds under my ear protection. It works really well. Plus they are only about thirty dollars.

Thanks for the idea, those full metal headphones are very well rated.
I need some of those-one of these days. :)
    Here's a pic --- kind of a big car :)

I do want to put a stereo in it. Just kind of lost on how much strength is needed to do what I want.

The noise level when running isn't that bad, about like running 60 mph with the windows down. So even a fair stereo can be heard, but would be struggling.

I like this jensen, but it is only 15 watts.

A sony and a sony kit with speakers that has a bit more power.

Just don't want to be disappointed, I've had a good stereo before, but that was 20 some years ago. It was a Pioneer component system that the head unit plugged directly into a amp. One of the best quality systems available. It rocked that old international pickup.
But man there are a LOT more choices now.

Maybe that jensen with an amp and a couple of tri ax speakers?

    Thanks
