Are there any old school Metallica fans out there?

In 1981 or thereabouts I went to see a band known as Raven at a club called The Sky Room in Buffalo NY. The opening band was called Metallica, and I thought they sucked! But, they threw out some records of theirs and I got to listen to it when I got home. Kill 'em All wound up being the first of a series of albums I had to have by the band (Ride the lightning, and Master of Puppets still remain 2 of the greatest metal albums ever IMHO). I have seen the band over 10 times including the first Woodstock reunion, with GNR and The Monsters of Rock tour.

I got to meet the band after a show in '89 when Newstead was with them. What an a$$hole that guy was, but the rest of the band was very cool. I got good and drunk with them and BSed with them for a few hours. They were just about us... The fans, not the money or fame. They enjoyed hanging with a fan and getting all liquored up. Coors though... Eeeewww!!! But Newstead seemed to have changed them.

They defined heavy metal, created it, and lived it. Since the tragic death of Cliff Burton, the band was never the same. Basically with the hiring of Bob Rock (well known for producing such brilliant metal bands like Bon Jovi:rolleyes: ) and Newfagsuckingcock Metallica became a Bon Jovi like band, but James' voice never fit the bill like Jon Bon Jovi's did. It's not that BJ sucks (hehehe, play on words :D), it's just a differant musical style, one that Metallica doesn't belong in.

The firing of Newfagsuckingcock and the promise of a return to old school Metallica prompted me to buy thier album (I haven't bought a Metallica album since And Justic for All (which was an OK album).

What a Joke. I mean JOKE. What is this lame attempt at speed metal? They were heavy metal, and origional about it too. Now they are trying to sound like Anthrax? Hey, I like Anthrax's style, but it is all about Belladona, not Hetfield. I can't get through the entire album. Is there any light within this tunnel of fesces?

I had to drop in some old school Metallica to be sure it wasn't age setting in. I found myself still head-banging to For Whom the Bell Tolls and repeating Fight Fire with Fire over and over again. I dropped in Master of Puppets and listened to it the same as when I was younger. I am not getting that old, I still feel reckless and energetic listening to the boys of old.

WTF? Someone please tell me ther is 1 good song on this album.

    A little OT, aren't we Seth :D

I bought St. Anger a couple days after it came out. I wasn't expecting "old school" Metallica (despite what critics/Metallica worshippers reviewed the album as) or the "newer" Metallica. I don't think you should expect the energy and vitality they showed 20 yrs. ago. I don't know any speed metal band will have the same energy and power while in their 40's as they did in their early 20's. I love every Metallica album from the "Black" album and down (of course that was released 11 yrs. ago...nothing but shit since). Master of Puppets, ...And Justice For All, and "Black", I think, are freakin' great. Ride the Lightning and Kill 'em All are cool, too. For St. Anger, I was just hoping for a decent rock album. The lyrics and voice of Hetfield are the main weaknesses of the album. I don't think the musicianship is all that bad, though (a bit bass heavy, though). An "instrumental" version of this CD would be cool. I've seen them in concert once (at the Sanitarium tour a few years ago) and they were badass. I'm going to see them again, at the Sanitarium, Aug. 9. Of course, they will be upstaged by DEFTONES! :D

saw them in san fran before they went on tour this year. very loud, very heavy. i wasnt blessed being frekin old and being able to see them at the small clubs all those years when they just tore shit up, but i am happy with the one small-venue show i got to see. the setlist was pulled from the first 4 albums, with frantic and st anger thrown in. very heavy and very loud, no acoustic versions of fade thrown in there anywhere.

as far as St Anger goes, dirty window is very loud in my car and all within my hands is a pretty decent song. im liking the album myself, and the different sound of the drums really breaks it apart from the last 3 that had the same sound to the drums pretty much.

Slayer, Panterra, Venom (well, they are done now, but Abbadon was in his late 30s on Black Metal), Motorhead, AC/DC, Death

    shall I go on?

Metallica wasn't speed metal, they were heavy metal. This album is a sad attempt at speed metal. An old Joey Belladonna era Anthrax wannabe. Don't get me wrong, OS Anthrax rocks.

Metallica is so into it for the money right now it is pitiful. Someone on CAF said if it weren't for the fact that "Metallica" made this album, it would be laughed at by everyone. They are living off their name right now, and sadly, I wish the greatest name in metal would simply die.

SETH, YOU GOD DAMN TROUBLEMAKER! :D

I was never a "metal" fan to begin with. I couldn't tell you the difference between heavy metal, death metal, speed metal, etc. Metallica was/is one of the few exceptions. I liked everything up to "Black", but nothing since. I've been to a Pantera concert, but I'm not a big fan. I'm more of a punker/alt. rock/rockabilly kinda dude. For loud, badass music, may I suggest, um, uhhhhh, Deftones :)

Old Metallica vs. New Metallica is like talking about abortion, religion, politics, or W7 vs. Brahma. Bring out the flame repellant...I still think the "instrumental" part of the CD isn't that bad. Maybe if Chino was doing lead vocals... :D

I posted my thoughts on the thread you started on CAF Seth, but I pretty much agree with everything you've said. I have actually bought every album they've put out thus far (yes bought) and liked them all. Thank god i chose to d/l this one, i honestly can't even stand to listen to it given how bad it's recorded.
