I am wanting to get a double-din head unit for my 1996 Lincoln Mark VIII (1995-1998 Mark VIII's have a double din unit stock). I have been looking at the kenwood ecelon stuff, the eclipse stuff, some pioneer stuff and the new clarion MAX675VD; here is a link: http://www.clarion.com/us/en/product...643389338.html I am not too interested in navigation right now, but might wanna add it later (can't do that on the eclipse stuff), I am interested in 5.1, but only if I can figure a place to mount the center channel tastfully (anyone familiar with the Mark VII dash, feel free to throw out some ideas). The biggest concern for me is sound quality. I am rather particular in what I like. I listen to a very broad range of music ;no rap, modern R&B and very little country, most everything else is game. Classical, movie soundtrack, talk radio, comedy, jazz, fusion, latin, most anything. A good portion of what I listen to is progressive rock (dream theater, rush, ect.). If you r familiar with Magnepan speakers (high end home audio speakers) and how they sound, this is what I prefer, but with a bit more bass. I like crystal clear (but not piercing) highs and well defined mids; not just boomy bass. I have always used clarion amps and gotten superb highs and midrange, IMHO. This and the ability to add on the features to the head unit I want at a later date, have me leaning toward the clarion headunit. Problem is I have never used a clarion headunit, or speakers for that matter. Second, I am not that familar with all the higher end car audio brands, so I am wanting to explore some options. I have used JVC and pioneer head units in the past (lower priced ones). Any thoughts on these or other double-din head units would be welcome (don't want a flip-out screen). What are considered the best SQ headunit companies?
I have personally used Clarion and Eclipse headunits and have been happy with both. The Eclipse allows for more technical control of your sound while the clarion was more user friendly. For the whole double din (DD) the closest I could find to what you are interested in would be the Eclipse AVN5495 though if you can live without DD the AVN7000 would be everything you need/want with the attached decoder. Great SQ, Navigation, DVD playback and the potential of 5.1 surround. Hope this helps.
