Im thinking about making some fiberglass doorpods for a component speaker system. Would I be able to make them out of MDF and cover them with fiberglass? Could I put the crossover inside the doorpod? Can I take thew tweeter from the front and add it to the front instead? How do I color them? Do I use dye or paint them?
I could go into a 30 page write up on fibre glass pods and buildout, custom mods, etc....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with fibre glass, you can do virtually anything you can think of! Maybe someone here has a good link to a site that covers them more in depth. As far as mounting x-overs in them, yes you can,no problem. as far as final finish, they can be painted/dyed, wrapped in vinyle or leather, covered in carpet/ozite, It is essentially body work like someone else in here said. your imagination is the limit and some crazy things can be done!

For building these can i stack peices of MDF in layers then shape them by sanding and grinding them down? That way they will be solid MDF for strength and to keep vibrations down. I will then cover them in fiberglass. Will this construction technique work? How much would i expect to pay to get these painted to match the car paint?
that techniche will work, but christ! the thoings will weigh in very heavy! If it works for you though, go for it! If you do the final sanding, finish work, I myself would chatge about 50 dollars minimum, up to about 125 bucks for something huge....
Yes MEDIUM DENSITY FIBERBOARD weighs a lot. Have you ever tried lifting a 4' X 8' sheet by yourself?? Easiest way would be to make the rings and set then however you want then fleece it...cure it...then glass it. Doing it your way will take ten times longer. Also the internal air space will be pretty small. Fleece then glassing is stronger and give you more internal air volume.
It can be done the way you want to do it if you have the shaping skills to do so. Just replace the mdf with blocks of green floral foam from wally world. They come in several assorted sizes and shapes. Glue enough of them together so you can shape them down to the size and shape you need. Usually when I'm doing this method, if I need to remove the pod. I'll use spray glue and foil to cover the foam after it's shaped before I apply the glass and resin. If I don't need to remove it. I just lay glass over the the foam itself. As long as you mix the resin and mekp in proper proportions. It won't harm the floral foam. After everything is cured up. You can cut the foam out then clean up any left overs with some acetone ( disolves the foam) .
I like ramos's idea. Has anyone else used this technique. I want to stay away from the look that stretching fleece over a ring gives.
I have used the foam method many times. It works well, but is more time consuming a little more difficult in some ways, in my opinion. The stretching of fabric/fibreglass method is pretty much the easiest method. If its not close enough to the shape you want , add body filler.. Try the foam block method though! It works......
Yep , the foam method works for most people. But I'm not a very artistic kind of person. I can't sculpt for chit . I only go the foam route for non complex projects
