I was thinking about putting some speakers in my rear liftgate on my 98 Grand Cherokee. I took the panel off and see two 4x4 holes but not sure if anything decent will fit back there. I have no problem cutting some metal, there's nothing between the inner and outer panel. I just not sure what will fit back ther since I've never seen anyone with speakers there or even if Jeep put anything there. Plus I'm not sure how much roome between the plastic and metal there is. Myabe 1-2 inches?What I'm really looking for is some ideas from someone the has done a Jeep like mine before. I want to move the sound from my face more to behind me.
what radio is installed now and how many sprakers and where? I went to Crutchfield.com are entered your 98 Jeep. they are saying that there are 3 factory speaker location...front kick panel,front door, and rear roof. That means that even if there is no speaker there now...there is metal already cut out for the speakers..then you just would have to cut the plastic. If you had your heart set on some 6x9's then you could get some pre-fabed boxes and mount the boxes to the lift gate. The factory sizes are as follows....kick panel and front door=4", 5.25", or 6.5" and rear roof= 4", 5.25", and SOME 6.5". I have the factory radio today..works fine at the moment. but I think you looked up the wrong year jeep..mine don't have the 6's in the rear roof. Mine have two tweeters in the dash-and 4 6's int the doors. I'd rather not put boxes on the liftgate...mean I'd have to do something! lol I "think".(oh god not again) that I can fit some 6x9's , nmaybe 6 3/4? What would be better? Might just cut now..measure (and cuss) latter to just see what I can do.just a "exploratory hole" I have LOTS of questions about my jeep and what i can do-or shouldn't do....On the VERY CHEAP....got 5 girls....and a wife.....and an ex....dog ran away lol
I can't find any pictures or link online, but I beleive it was the 1998 Grand Cherokee 5.9 that came with speakers in the trunk. I think they were mounted in a sound bar which was up against the roof. Sorry I can't be more specific, I can't find much online so I'm just going from memory.
