I've been wanting to dive into custom box making, fiber glassing and all that funs stuff, but a sub box was just to easy to come by to be worth making one, but than a few months ago i came across a guy who posted about his car with these custom speaker boxes, and mounting he did for his rare seat speakers. i took his idea and ran with it, granted he took his 6 1\2" speaker socket and made 6x9" boxes for his speakers and i just took my 6 1\2" and made 6 1\2" speaker boxes i did it mostly for the learning..and hopfully better accoustics of the speakers, right now i'm in the final stages of the speaker boxes. by my measurements and math, i'm only able to cover about half of the original hole with the new boxes, would anybody have any insite into what kind of acoustic problems i'd be running into, should i just only cut out the part of the bottem of the box that goes to the origonal hole. or would i get better accoustics in the rare with the mid's with a sealed box? or if i could just avoid the old holes all together, drill and seal the hole for the speaker, and drop in a port hole on the side of the box, would that sound better? what is going to give me the best accoustics? personaly i'd just love to keep the bottom sealed and put a port hole into the speaker boxes i created. :| if that sounds good to you guys, let me know where i could get my hands on such a port because I woudln't have the slightest idea :| anyhow, picture time! first cut, traced the rare pannel, cut it out, so on so forth and with boxes done, preliminary sanding, and some edge routing done to the box and the flat pannel.
been working on this today, got some major headway, finily got the speakers cut into the boxes, and i was going to do some more boxes for the tweets but than i realised i had plenty of room in the main boxes that i could jsut offset the speakers, they're offset 4x4 from the left and right corners of the boxes, origonaly i had them both the same...i screwed up. i had 2 right side speakers with tweets being on the right side on both boxes, but abotu 2 hours of fixing and gluing and cutting and a massive amount of sanding later, it was back to where i screwed up >_< anyhow, pictures. enjoy, also have a video. i'm just about 1 final sand and some glue and screws away from being ready to fabric this baby up video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tKJueQDauc mocking up the light, i had origonaly cut the same holes that were on the old plank, but it was only 1\8", this is 1\2", so i had to just cut the whole thing out and drop it down, foruantnatly it seems that it fits far enough down to grab the metal and hold properly with out any more modding light mocked up in the carwith the plank, with one speaker box, just double checking how it fit. this is me marking the boxes up to be cut, as you can see, at this point i already was on my way to disaster, since both were layed out for the same side (jack ass <_< ) and finialy some speaker mock ups, with 1 tweeter mounting in the one box and a speaker in the other mounting. of course that's not the real speaker, that's just a random speaker
I think he meant the hole in the middle back, which is probably where the rear window light goes, right?
the hole he refers to is the back right and left on each box, and thats for the tweeters, they're 2 way compnates i finished the project today, took me about 7 solid hours more of work. mainly because i dont really work with fabric and i did just about everything twice :| aand i tripple checked every number i took. anyhow, i'm in the middle of sorting images and videos and i'll have it up in about 30 mins.
alright here we go! enjoy, as this was a major pain in the but to go through these images >_< still can't figuire out how to put youtube vid direct veiws, but the links will be provided, go if you wish, otherwise enjoy the images. putting fabric on box done with one box box exam http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1Z_ouNKFJk tweeter install mounting boxes to floor screwing boxes down. tweeters installed opening speaker packaging installing woofer the dogs relaxing as i work ;P speaker close up video exam of speakers and boxes all mounted http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNHlhYLsaw0 about to do final set in back seat and installed and wired! woot and finely ! sound test don't mind the treble burst, that didn't really happen, the mic just picked up the vibrations from the sound :| http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AN-EcLp5tX0 this test was done about 60% on head unit, and 60% output on rear stage and front stage from the amp, the front speakers sound like ass right now, they can barely keep up with, they're rated at 180 peak, and the amp is doing aolmost 150 rms right now :| they really can't go above 60% of they'll pop
and sounds even better i was very pleased, i've been tweaking it, i'm sitll not able to tune it becasue my front stage is so extreamly gimped right now, waiting on this weekend to install the front speakers and the sound dampening material i bought, which just arrived today, i have enough sound dampening material to do my entire car but i only plan on doing my front doors and trunk.
Oh, its for the tweeters, way cool. It should sound really good. The speakers are mounted solid and thats the key to a really fantastic sounding speaker. What are you gonna do about the front speakers now?
somehting to that effect, probably won't be able to fit that cross over in that door, i'll probobly mount it up behind the dash. it's rather large, almost as much surface area as the speaker :| the JBL' cross over were even larger >_< i'm just praying the depth on my speaker fits, its pretty deep >_<
