Sony Xplod Amp Problem (heating)

I'm running a 1100w Sony Xplod XM-D500X Amp for my 10'' MTX Thunder Pro 500w subs. Yeah, I know, bad choice with Sony right? So my amp shuts off when it gets too hot. I know this because the power light turns red instead of green, and it's a feature of the amp I have. Is this common with all (Xplod) amps? Does anyone have any suggestions for keeping my amp the right temperature? My amp is right behind my back seats leaning on the back of my subwoofers. I actually drive with the middle of my back seat down (the armrest that you can pull down) and open so that I can see the amp and it has SOME ventilation. Suggestions? New amp?

Welcome, sony wasn't a good choice but they work..

    ok, you amp i think is rated at 250W x 1 @ 4 Ohms, 500W x 1 @ 2 Ohms.

Question, your subs are dual voice coil right? are they 4ohm dual voice coil? how do you have them wired? you only have 1 sub?

    MTX THUNDERPRO 10" Sub

    *
500 Watts / Single Voice Coil
    *
    Magnet Weight: 50 ounces
    *
    Nominal Impedance: 4 ohm
    *
    Frequency Responce:26Hz-2.5kHz
    *
    Sensitivity: 93dB
    *
    Mounting Depth 5-1/2"
    *
    Voice Coil Diameter: 2 inches

I got 2 of these in a bandpass enclosure. Yeah, Sony works and all, but I'm tired of it shutting off when it gets too hot. I was suggested either to keep it cool as much as possible (which I need opinions on), not play it too hard, or get a new amp.

I'm actually not sure, I didn't put the subs in the box. I got them when they were already enclosed.

now, if the answer is yes, then it's not a load problem.

    1. you should recheck your ground wire. how long is it? where did you ground it to? it should be very short.
    2. is your power wire on the same side as the RCA wires? if they are then put them on opposite sides.
    3. check your connections at the amp. make sure no wires are touching one another. sometimes, just one strand of wire may be touching the power wire which can cause the amp to go into protect.
    4. do you have bass boost on the amp? if so, turn it down.
    5. how high is the gain setting on the amp?

well, the can only be wired in either a 2ohm or 8ohm load configuration so either way your amp can handle it.

    1. It is short, grounded to my trunk
    2. RCA's wired opposite to power of course. I have a question about my RCA's: I have one line of RCA cables connected into the input of my amp. I also have another line of RCA cables connected to the output of my amp, back into my stereo deck. Does this make an effect? Is it pointless?
    5. i'll have to check tomorrow

just make sure your ground wire is really secure. It may just be a case of something that got loose.
With the RCA's, you only need a set of RCA's coming from the preouts of deck to the input of the amp. you don't anything else, just pull it out.

Alright cool, will check the wires. Do you have any suggestions for a better amp though? My subs are old school so I don't mind anything cheap, as long as it's durable and worthy. I don't want to have to deal with it shutting off when it gets too hot, especially because I drive long distances a lot.

well that would all depend upon your budget.

you may want to look at some POWER ACOUSTIK amps, they are cheap but they're solid. If your working with a not so big budget then you should have a look.

Alright man thanks a lot. That's a lot of help. I went on these forums because I wasn't getting any essential feedback at crutchfield. These forums must be good ones.

For the Power Acoustik Amps, do you reccomend Class D/Mono? 2-Channel? Where should i look for these amps? Craigslist? audio customizing shops?

since it's for subs i would look into a D class amp. They run cooler and they aren't power hogs.

I would look at places like ebay, sonicelectronix.com or woofersetc.com

here's a PA amp i found on ebay:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/POWER-ACOUSTIK-PS1-2000D-2000W-MONO-AMP-AMPLIFIER-NEW_W0QQitemZ120343275129QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCar_Amplifiers?hash=item120343275129&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1234|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

again, i'm not sure if this is within your budget but this amp will put out 900watts at 2ohms which would be perfect for your subs..

have you looked into getting a fan? even a small one can help.

I'm going to try everything I can to keep it as cool as possible, but if the problem continues, I'll probably look into getting a new amp. Thanks for the suggestion but getting a fan seems pretty extreme. Knowing me I might actually try it though haha.

Im not sure I follow you with how you have your RCAs. You have them coming out from the stereo into the input of the amp then you another set coming from the output going back into the headunit, how is that possible to do?? The output on amps are used to daisychain amps together, it is not ment to go back to the headunit.
