I'm a former electronics R&D tech. Do you all know the diff between sequential tuning ( scanning up and down ) and random access tuning? ( punching in channel 123 and hitting enter to get that channel? ) We just had a Sony CDX-GT640UI with a Sirius tuner added. The receiver is billed as "sat ready". Yay! So they install it and I go to Sirius' site to activate and go through all the rigamarole, including credit card number, etc. When I'm done, a checklist that includes having the radio on, and having it tuned to channel 184. Ok, how do I do that? I RTFM and there isnt a word in there about how to tell what sat channel I'm on, with the radio's display, OR how to random tune a channel, i.e. typing in 184 and Enter, and going there. The front panel keys are no help, they only go from 1-6. Cant random tune that way. I already used the Source button to turn the radio on and find sat mode, which is Sirius, cool... So I try using the Mode button and it switches me between Sirius 1, 2 and 3, whatever THOSE are, but still now channel 184. By now I'm frustrated. On one of those, I was getting some audio, so I left it there and went back to the house PC and finished the activate procedure, pushed the finish button, and nada. It takes me to another page, with no acknowledgement that I activated the frapping thing. So finally I go out to the car with credit card in hand, and the SID number and call their 800 activation number. They manage to talk me through activation, but still there's no way that I can find, to randomely tune channels. So now I have an activated radio with a manual that makes no mention of how to tune sat channels, a tuner on it, that came with nothing but tech installation instructions, and I'm a Sirius subscriber. Yay! So ok, I bought the "Mostly Everything" package from them. I even called Sony support today, and got a guy who speaks mostly broken english, and must live in Kirgikistan, and had to hang up on HIM after 10 minutes because he couldn't even grasp my request, and kept telling me things that had zip to do with what I needed. Does ANYONE on the planet, short of the design engineers in Sony's R&D department, have ANY idea of how to enter-tune sat channels on this thing? Like for example, I want to tune to channel 145. How? What combo of keys do I need to press to GET that channel while stopped at a light, without holding the scan key while I'm driving for 10 minutes and looking for the channel name? ( I dont even see any channel numbers mentioned on this thing. ) The Sony people who did this manual should be spanked for this, and I volunteer to do it!
I think that you will find that most members here are not Sony fans. I owned a Sony once, had it for 3 months and sold it, cheap. Bought a Kenwood and had it for and had it for 6 years. Awesome radio. Replaced it with an Alpine. Originally had some problems with the Alpine, but the dealer and Alpine Tech were a big help and they really wanted and did fix the problem. I was impressed. Good luck, let us know how it goes
I only have one car with XM and its a Pioneer. Yes it can save channels for direct access. I am certain that the Kenwood and your Sony should be able to also. I read your post again and I have one question. Is 184 the only channel your getting? If so, your Sirius unit is not activated.
didnt it come with a remote with a 1 thru 9 and a 0 button on it? i have a pioneer and had XM and the only way to direct access a ch was to use the remote. or use the genre mode and then tune thru that till you got to your ch.
No, when I was trying to activate it, the Sirius instructions said to tune 184 but all that kept coming up was Sirius channels 1, 2 and 3. That's ok now, but still no way to random access tune.
