I own a single cab 04 silverado. So far the only subs that i found to fit behind the seat are "shallow" or "thin" subs. I have been looking at the JL 13tw5 subs. I was wondering if there is a better manufacturer out there who makes shallow subs. Price is not an objective as long as they have a great crisp clean sound. I'd rather pay more to get more. Also looking for a reliable amp to run. I've heard horrible things about Boss and Hifonics and decent things about Planet Audio. Please inform me if you know of anything different. i just want a good loud quality sound. Thanks
I don't have much experience with subs, but the mention of $500 subs and Amp brands that are sold at Walmart(Boss) put a disturbing image in my head. I'm sure you'll get some good recommendations here for an amp that pairs well with JL. Good luck!
The JL TW-5 is probably the best shallow sub out there. You need at least 500 watts RMS to get the best sound from them and they need only about 0.8 cu. ft. per enclosure. They will out-perform many deep 12" woofers. They have an unusual 3-Ohms impedance so running two on a mono block amp will result in 1.5-Ohm load. They are rather inefficient due to the large 7" voice coil.
Google the new Alpine type R shallow mounts. Car Audio and Electronic has a good write up about them. Not cheap. $500 a pop. They handle the same amount of power as a standard size type R. Which r awesome subs and practically bulletproof. I would go with a decent monoblock rated at least 500 watts RMS. If money is not an issue look at Zapco or ARC Audio amps.
Im happy with my Rockford P3 shallow mounts. They are 10" subs and I have 2 of them in my GMC Sonoma standard cab.
Since the topic is shallow subs, I'll show you something I did for a Lexus customer who wanted to retain the stock HU and get a better sub system without taking up the trunk. I built this system using the Memphis Audio 12" shallow sub. A JL Audio XD600/1 powers the sub. The enclosure is about 4" deep.
