what is better for setting your gain to get the maximum output for your amp? by ear or by dmm?

I have a hifonics BXi 1210d that supposedly does 1200 wrms (i know it is overrated) and a soundstream t5-15 that handles 1000 wrms.
so basically i just want to get the most out of my amp without it clipping.

also, how can u tell when your headunit is clipping the signal?
and also when the speakers are distorting? (no amp running speakers, only headunit)

lastly, i have Kenwood KFC-1682ie 6-1/2" coaxial speakers in the front and stock speakers in the back.
should i only use the front speakers by changing the settings on the headunit or should i just use both?

    sorry for all the questions.
i've been asking a lot lately.
but this is what forums are for right? lol :)

For 2010 Hifonics is cea compliant, so if it says 1200 watts at 14.4 volts it should make that. When your speakers start distorting they have come to their maximum excursion or they are getting a clipped signal, either way you should turn it down. Use a meter tyo set the gains. Use your rear speakers but just buse them for rear fill, fade you headunit to the front somewhat.

    thanks guys.
if i set my gains by ear with the eq flat, can i set my sub level to +11 out of +15 and can i set my 5band eq to:
    band 1 - +2 out of +9
    band 2 - +3 out of +9
    band 3 - +4
    band 4 - +6
    band 5 - +7
    without distorting the signal???

Im setting it with a 50Hz test tone at 0db (louder than regular music)
