I'm really, really thinking of replacing my Type R comps (which I love) with the Kodas. My Type R's have a well deserved reputation for having outstanding midbass (which they do), but the Kodas, from EVERYTHING I've read, smoke them. Seth, I know about the smoothness AND wide dispersion of the tweet, and the fatter than fat midbass from the Koda, but how is the overall "tonality" of the Kodas? Do male/female voices sound completely natural and free of sibilance? My only real complaint about the Type R's is the upper midrange (2.5ish-3.5 KHz, where the woof is crossed and the tweet starts to takes over) sometimes displays a "ringing" sound. It's subtle, and hard to hear unless your trying...unfortunately I know about it so I can't just ignore it. I seem to focus on it more and more. Hard to describe, but if you've ever heard it, you know what I'm referring to. Sort of the human voice equivalent of the ringing you hear a microphone make. I'm sure a EQ might alleviate this, but I'd kind of like to keep my setup minimal. Koda's are on my short list of Type R replacements, along with the XR's and Type X comps. BTW, I have a 15A that should arrive any freakin' day now. I would probably HP the Kodas, at 50-60 hz, so keep that in mind when giving your opinion on how they will sound "overall", as in 50-60 hz and up... Thanks.
That is a responce from an anal SQ guy on caf. He was very pleased. It is very flat throughout the range with a totally smooth transition. I have mine crossed at 50Hz seeing 100 watts and ther are getting pummeled lately. For some reason I have been in a booming mood lately. My biggest gripe is I need another layer of deadening on the drivers door (1 on the skin and 1 on the web already, 2 on the web and 1 on the skin of the passenger side). The sound is incredibly accurate with very quick tweets that are rather bright on axis (and I reccomend off axis) that maintain composure in even the most difficult situation. Siblance is nil, and I mean nil. The sound is very XR like in that it is smooth and accurate, yet it doesn't display the muddieness I hear sometimes on the XRs or the ringing that some complain about on the XRs. Midbass extention reaches into the subwoofer frequencies. I ran mine full range for a while but feared bottoming them. They will lay waste to the Type Rs. Complaints? Tweets are very big and the terminals are poorly located. No grille, big magnets make installing a PITA. Crossover does not allow for attenuation. Small prices to pay for the best all around set for under a grand I say though.
