hey i just got a resonant engineering 35.1, it will turn on, make a pop, then the protect light comes on. what could it be other then wiring that could cause this? my wiring and everything is fine, the amp case is not grounded but the amp is proporly grounded. what internal problems could it be? Oh btw, what are some specs on this amp, if anyone knows? i know its 1500rms@1 ohm and around 1000rms@ 2ohm. what is the thd, and effiency? thanks

How did you install the ground wire, in detail!!!!??????

But usually when an amp goes into protect, it signifies either a bad amp or a serious wiring or speaker issue...Are the subs voice coils good? Is a speaker wire crossed or shorted? tensile lead on the speaker shorting? Low voltage from the battery, lots to look for....

*sigh* Most new people to this world today don't even know what a "real good" ground is...Not aiming at you Jeff, just have seen a lot of "good grounds" and to find out that the paint isn't even sanded to bare metal or that it is using an existing seat belt bolt or duct taped to the fender well...

ha ha ha ha yeah, i know what you are saying about "good grounds". I have it connected under the seat mount bolt. bare metal, about 2 feet long. voice coils are good, and lead wires are separate and well connected. 12.7 volts when truck is off, 14.9 running. yea i have seen a ground connected to a spare tire mounting bolt with electrical tape and it was about 8 feet long.

well, hate to bust your bubble, but a seat bolt ground sucks a dogs ass twice... Damnit son, grind down to some bare metal and drill a hole, then BOLT that ground down like you mean it! And any ground wire over 18 inches in length is TOO long..... Lets get that sucker grounded good and tight, same with the rest of your electrivcal system...make sure its all good and solid. I could go into an entire write up on why a good ground is essnetial!!! but nOt tonight!

I was about to also say that any seat bolt is not a good ground...damnit Viking

Simple way to check any power or ground. It's called Voltage Drop. Beats the crap out of any "ohm" test or assumption.

voltage may be there but also could have a high resistance along with it

Disconnect d subs from d amp and turn it on and tell us what happens.
Is the protect light still on?

Absolutely voltage will be there. But a drop will test dynamic resistance of the circuit under load. Something an ohm test will not show. If you have one strand of wire, or slight contact to a ground, it will still read good or acceptable ohms because a meter only shoots like 10 milliamp down a circuit. Hardly a stress test, for sure. But, when you hook the positive lead to the source, and the negative lead to the end of the cable, or connection, turn on the device, it is loaded. The voltage read on the meter is the drop. That works on the positive and the negative side of the circuit. Basically, it will tell you the resistance in the circuit under load.

Case in point. A starter turns slow, or drags. Hook an ohm meter from positive battery terminal to starter stud. Ohms are next to nothing. But, switch the meter to volts, same hook up, and watch the voltage on the meter. 200-400 amp load, the drop should really be around .3 volts on the positive, and generally should be less than .5 on the negative. Trying to run that kind of current through the 5 strands, or corrosion won't work, but the ohm meter still says it's fine.
