I changed out that crappy kenwood head unit that my wife had in her CRV. It was skipping all the time and It just annoyed the hell out of me. Anyway, I put a pioneer DEH-3900MP. Nothing flashy, actually not that great but it gets the job done. I haven't installed a head unit for a long time now so I got it in with no real problems but now, when the car is turned off and you start the car again. you have to turn the stereo on manually and all the setting reset. When i connected it up, i know i made a mistake by putting the yellow and red wires together for the power. My question is, what do I have to do to get the stereo to turn on when you start the car again? It's a real pain in the butt the way I have it now.
find a switched twelve volt source, possibly the cig lighter but if not just tap into a fuse in the fusebox.
I was hoping i wouldn't have to do that. I'm thinking the yellow wire should be connected to something on the original harness for the stereo instead of put together with the power wire. It's an '04 CRV, any other ideas?
Yellow wire usually goes straight to the battery or a 12 volt wire in your dash that still has power when you turn off the key. That keeps all your settings and time. The red wire goes to your ignition accessory wire or a 12 volt source that shuts off when you turn your key off. So you need to keep the red wire where you have it-switched and the yellow wire you need to run directly to the battery or find a 12 volt wire that has power all the time even when the key is off. Mine i twisted my red and yellow together and ran a wire straight up to my battery with a 10 amp fuse inline. That way you don't need the key on to play the stereo and it keeps all my settings. But when starting your car you should turn off the deck so you don't get voltage spikes to the deck from the car starting.
I get what you mean. I did that before with my other car way back in college. I was just hoping that there would be a certain wire from the original harness that would do that. I guess there isn't so I'm going to have to do it the way you said. Thanks electro
both wires should be in the original harness, the power all the time and the switched power, if you have a voltmeter it's easy to find out. Just don't use the ground from the original car's harness.
ok, i'm a real dumbass sometimes. I found this. RADIO 12V|white/red |+ |radio | RADIO GROUND|black |+ |radio | RADIO SWITCH|yellow/red |+ |radio | RADIO ILLUMINATE|red/black |+ |radio | LF SPEAKER|grn/blk - lt green | |radio | RF SPEAKER|grn/yel - gry/red | |radio | LR SPEAKER|blu/wht - blu/blk | |radio | RR SPEAKER|pink - blu/yel | |radio | What's the radio switch for? and the radio illumination? What i did was just use the radio 12v connection.
oh, i had it backwards your wiring is different, the radio 12v white-red needs 12 volts all the time, that keeps all your settings and time, the radio switch yellow-red goes to a switched power like your ignition accessory so when you turn your key off the stereo turns off.
