First, I have no intention of putting a lot of money in my sons car, but I do on occasion drive it. It needs to sound really good. The problem with the Cavalier is that it has 3-1/2-inch speakers up front and it needed a lot more. I built a small enclosure and used a Factory Ford 6 x 8 in it. I used an old Pioneer GM H50 in tri-mode. The center gets 80-watts RMS and the 3-1/2's get 25-watts RMS each. (my son needs to clean his car) While it sounds good, I wonder if I really need a sealed enclosure. The Factory Ford Speaker is intended to mount free air in a door. Would it sound better if I cut a 3-inch hole in the back. Its pretty well sealed from left to right. I cannot see cancelation as being a problem. Opinions please
didnt you just put some subs in it?why not cut out the other side and mount some decent 6x8's and run them mono.sorta like haveing a center ch for each person. maybe?
Ranger...that is pretty nifty. I like it...and I have four factory Ford 6x8s from my last Explorer install If it sounds good than I wouldn't worry about...I would either polybag them or get some baffles...they won't make much bass and the baffles may improve sound quality
Is the car a auto or manual? I had a cavalier but the things where you put the speakers were missing. i hated those 3 1/2 speakers. i went through about 3 pairs. That is a kick ass idea though. I wish I thought of something like that when I had my cavalier.
Beins how the 6x8 is designed to operate in free air, its parameters will allow it to work in a very small sealed enclosure and still reach the lower frequencies. I would think that a small fibreglass enclosure or even the poly bag idea would be beneficial to the overall soundquality. Either that, ot put another 6x8 on the other side..........
Automatic. The problem with not having full range speakers up front, is that you can tell the subs are behind you. Transient response sucks. High pass filters on amps are for people who have no clue. We need full range up front. To make all the sound appear to come from the 3-1/2's is easy. First we use a shallow crossover, in my case a 99mf capacitor. Now placement of the center doesnt matter as long as its up front and center. Here is where I radically depart from the "experts". The experts say that voice needs to be the target of the center, I say whats missing needs to be the target. And in most cases, midbass is missing. Again I need a shallow crossover and it needs to be low enough so that its not directional. In my case I am using a 0.8mH coil which puts the crossover point at about 800Hz I would consider that except for the impedence thing. While overall it sound really good, I need a little more from the center. The gain on the amp is just over half, which is my upper limit. I just need a little more, I need to "feel" Teds guitar. I am also considering increasing the size to 6 x 9
well if you add another 6x8 you can run all 4 up front in 2ohm stereo.or the 2 6x8's in an 8 ohm mono configuration.
