    Saftey

My Cousins Wife was just recnetly Killed in a Car Accident involving a Dodge Ram, and his small Honda Car.

The Truck came out reativly Un-damaged, and the Occupents Un Injured

the Honda was DESTORTY, and He lies in the hospital, and his wife is dead

Had they also been in his AMERICAN truck, the out come WOULD (no doubt in my mind) been ALOT differant

Hell about 5 years go, I was involved in a SERIOUS crash with my 84 Thunder Bird a 95 Tahe, and a 95 Ram, the Ram came to rest ON TOP of my Bird and the three of us in the car came away with minr injuries( the worst of which was a Dislocted Jaw)

Just re-enforces my stance on not buying "honda type" imports

and please dont start off with those RIGGED saftey tests from insurance copanies or the Hightway commison,

I have seen enough wrecks of differant types to know "honda type imports" FAIL in REAL WORLD crashes

    My condolences to your family.....

Not everyone can afford a very rugged vehicle or it's just not practical... Take a Chevy Cavalier, Ford Escort, other economical vehicles, you'll see the same thing...

T-birds are heavy as hell and have large front and rear ends...Trucks are just built mean as hell....you can take most medium or small cars and get the same results whether it be domestic or foreign...

But seriously, my prayers go out to your cousin and his late wife and the rest of the family and friends...

Last year my mother was driving about 40MPH in a 35 MPH zone. Little did she know there were 2 boys chasing each other coming from the other direction (head on to her). Their speeds were around 65MPH.

One was in a rented Expedition, the other in an early 80s Olds (Delta 88 or 98) and he was driving with a suspended lisence and NO INSURANCE. Well, said uninsured piece of shit pulled out into my mothers lane and hit her head on at the rate estimated above (65MPH) so we will add that 65 MPH, and mom's 40MPH and we reach a heafty 105 MPH into a brick wall basically. She was driving a 2000 Toyota Corolla (she's always liked the smaller cars, it's not that she can't afford the bigger cars).

My mother walked away from the accident. The did need to cut her out of the car of course, and they took her to the hospital to be looked over. They kept her overnight just to be sure. She had some heavily bruised knees, a ringing in her ears that lasted a few days, Bruises on her inner forarms, powder burn on her neck, and brush burns on her face (all from the airbag). Aside from that, she was fine.

The car was a total, and I mean total loss. The engine was sitting right on the windshield, and the hood was imbedded in the trunklid. The wheels had wrapped around, almost comically, and were holding the doors closed. The car was designed to peal away like a banana, and it did. It saved her life, I have no doubt about that. If they had been 2 big old American cars, both drivers would be dead. In the old days, the cars took the impact without peeling away for driver safety. This left all the impact to be absorbed by the drivers body. Now it is absorbed by the vehicles designed breakaway methood (very similar to how F1 cars come apart).

That wreck scared her into a slightly bigger car though. She's now driving an '03 Mazda 626.

Michael... anytime you take one vehicle that's heavier than another, and crash them together, the vehicle that's heavier has more momentum...
By that logic, we should all be trying to buy a heavier vehicle than anything else on the road. We too can all be driving cars that get 8 MPG, and not because they are fast, but because they have a badge that says "Hummer" on it...
But then when everyone has Hummers, where do we go?
    Kenworth?
Abrams? I saw that guy in Las Angeles...

And the logic doesn't work either...
Those big, heavy cars have full frames... particularly with old-school full-frame vehicles (and I can't imagine newer ones are too much better).

Do this. Take a peanut M&M, and a wooden ruler. Set the ruler on the floor pointing at your baseboard, set the M&M in one of the ruler's holes.
Slide the ruler forward quickly with the M&M staying in the hole. Ram it into the baseboard.
Ooh.. poor M&M... it hit the baseboard. Did it crack it's candy shell? :D

Full-frame vehicles don't absorb the impact of the collision, just like the ruler didn't... so the objects inside the vehicle still have their full 70MPH momentum... the vehicle stops suddenly, they still are going at 70MPH... they'll stop when they hit something, of course... full brunt of the collision on the seatbelt, dashboard, whatever.

On the other hand, these lighter cars that you umbrella under "less safe"...
They are unibody cars, that are not just lighter weight (ie. better performance and more efficient no matter how you slice it)...
But they have "crumple zones" built into them.
The car's cabin is built like a roll cage, to not collapse on impact.
However, the trunk and front are built much differently.

In the event of a collision, they crumple up intentionally, to absorb the impact... slowing down the vehicle just that much more, like an ugly metal pillow in front of you, driving the engine into the ground rather than into the car.

    That IS safer.

The argument about "which vehicle sustained more damage" is really a bad one to look at..
The framed, heavier vehicle won't sustain as much damage.
    Poor people inside.

    Technically that's not always true...

if the heavier vehicle was moving at 1mph, and the lighter vehicle was moving at 100mph.... the lighter vehicle would have more momentum when you crash them together

    :D

My mother didn't see a dime, Eric. She tried to go after him (he had nothing) and the guy in the rented Expedition. The Guy in the Expo left the scene, and he was the chaser. Guess what he had? Nothing  . Thankfully my mother had collision and her insurance company payed for the car, but that was it

The uninsured bastard actually didn't even get taken in, or charged with anything other than driving with a suspended liscense (no crossing a double yellow, no speeding, no reckless driving, no driving without insurance, NOTHING!!!).

At the time my mother was driving to school (for her second degree, YAY MOM!!! I'm proud to say she just recieved her BA in buisness admin a few months ago), and she missed so much time from school, she had to drop the semester she had already paid for  . She really came out in a lose lose situation in that deal. But she survived with just bumps and bruises so we are gratefull for that.
