Well, I guess I'm kinda late to post this, but I just found this area...
I've been on the PolkAudio forum and CAF for a few months now. I'm building my dream system piece-by-piece as my budget (and my wife) allows. I've learned a freaking ton by hanging around in the forums for a while. It's kinda funny.
A few months ago, I knew very little about car audio. But now at work, people always see me browsing the car audio forums so it's gotten around that I'm the local car audio "expert". People I dont' even know will come up and start asking me questions of what they should do for their car stereos. I think it's pretty funny anyways.
I'm a 24 yr old Missourian temporarily transplanted to Utah for school at BYU. While out here, I found my other half and acquired the title "Husband". I've not yet gained the "Father" role (thankfully).
I'll probably have way more questions than answers here, but here's my system so far. I drive a 2000 Mustang V6 coupe. Pretty much stock except for the '98 cobra wheels. I've got an Alpine 9815 HU with Polk Momo MM6 components in the front. They are driven by a PPI PCX 440 bridged to 160Wx2. In the rear, I have polk dB650 coaxials run off the HU. I usually have them turned off when I don't have passengers. I'll probably sell the rear speakers when I get a sub.
Right now, I'm looking for a sub and amp. Spending as little as possible, I'd like to get a good mix of SQ and SPL. Bias towards SQ. If I can get a Koda for the right price, I'd like one of those, since I've heard really good things about them. To amp them, I'm not sure what'd be best, but the HiFonics Zeus ZX4000 I can get for around $170. It bridges to 400Wx1 @ 4 ohms. If there is something better, please let me know. Nice to be here!

I would look at less power. All you need is 250 watts really.

    Welcome to CAT!

...Less power, as long as you can afford the trunk space for more than the bare minimum size enclosure.
There's a direct correlation between "how large of an enclosure I'm using" and "how much power I need to reach full excursion"... the larger the enclosure, the less air compression the sub needs to fight against as it operates, so the less power it needs to reach full excursion.

And you aren't an "old member".... I can name at least 4 or 5 members here that have 2 or 3... or 6 (*cough*) or 10+ years on you. :p

well, by 'old member' I meant on other forums. I'm totally new to CAT. I've been into car audio for maybe a year and half. I know there's guys on here that have been doing it for 20-30+ years. Relatively, I'm a total newb :)

I have a pretty small trunk in my daily driver that I use all the time, so I'd like to keep the box as small as possible. If it would save me a ton of money, I could maybe go larger, but I'd prefer small. Recommended size for a sealed Koda 10 is from .75 to 1.25 cu ft, correct? How much power would i need to push the Koda to full excursion in a .75 cu ft box? How much at 1.25? No matter what the sealed box size, if I'm pushing the sub to full excursion, I'm getting the same SPL, correct? Also, if I only need 250 watts, what would you recommend as a good amp under ~$175ish?
