should i ground my amps straight to the negative post of the battery?

i have side/top mounts...so the sides will be used for the power coming from under the hood, and the negative will go to chassis ground

You can. Personally, I ground to the frame. However, I also ground my second battery to the frame at the same point. Basically I do it to eliminate any real issues derived from ground issues (re. noise) by eliminating voltage potential differencials in every way possible. Actually, my second battery is grounded to the frame, where the amps are all grounded, and to the body. I may not be well grounded, but my batteries sure are :p
