Noise Bill Being Considered in Tennessee March 24, 2004 -- State lawmakers in Nashville, Tenn., are looking at a bill that would limit sound emitting from a vehicle to 50 feet on public property, according to an article in Nashville's City Paper. Legislation is pending in the state House and Senate that would require motorists to turn down amplification systems in vehicles. The legislation was listed on the agendas of both the House and Senate on March 24, 2004. According to the news article, the bill would require that drivers with amplified sound systems in their vehicles turn their music down or be fined up to $50. The Senate version of the bill would create a new rule of the road prohibiting motor vehicle owners from operating a radio, compact disc player or loudspeaker from within the motor vehicle in a manner that causes sound to be audible from 50 feet or more from the vehicle. Sounds from vehicles on private property could not be audible beyond the property line. However, the bill's House version was amended to remove the provision regarding noise produced by motor vehicles on private property.
