Hey guys, im new to all this car audio stuff, so have a basic question that im sure someone will be able to answer! My headunit has a 4x45 watt amplifier built in - if i want to upgrade my standard front and rear speakers to full range coaxials which will be powered by the headunit, what should i be looking at in terms of "RMS" etc etc. All help is much appreciated, Cheers
I would actually recomend that u just buy ureself a good but still cheap amp. U would be much more happy with how it sounds. What speakers were u looking at, and what size do they have to be?
well the thing is i really am on a budget, just need something that will be ok for the time being. Just a set of speakers that goes directly in place of the original ones. I will be going into more detail with my car audio later, but at the moment the engine is where most of my funds are being used. I need 2 x 10cm and 2 x 13 cm
Well i am always on a budget too but it still can be done. Trust me. Get maybe this for an amp, maybe a lil bit more power but ya Power Acoustik PS4-300 - 4 ohms: 40 watts x 4 • 2 ohms: 50 watts x 4 • PWM MOSFET power supply • High or low level inputs with floating ground • Tri-Mode capable • S/N ratio: 97 dB • Frequency Response: 10 Hz - 30,000 Hz - , Car Amplifiers, Multi-cha maybe this one depending on how the budget is Crunch PZi 100.4 - 600W 4-Channel Amplifier • 100W x 4 chan. @ 4 Ohms • 150W x 4 chan. @ 2 Ohms • PWM power supply • illuminated logo • silver RCA line inputs/outputs • silver power connectors • powered by Maxxsonics - , Car Amplifiers, Multi-channel then the speakers will depend on the size. when u can tell us that we can help even more.
your head unit wont push more than 16 watts x 4 channels. Any decent quality speaker will sound fine if installed correctly
The speaker sizes i will be fitting will be 10 cm in the front and 13 cm in the rear. I live in the UK, but that amp looks very good for that low price. If i were to get an amp, how would i wire it so it could power the speakers which will be connected to the original wiring?
umm maybe these Alpine SPS-10C2 - 4" 2-way speakers • aluminum-coated woofer cone with air-injected rubber surround • 3/4" silk dome tweeter - , Car Speakers, 4" Speakers - Sonic Electronix and these Alpine SPS-13C2 - 5-1/4" 2-way speakers • aluminum-coated polypropylene woofer • rubber surround • 3/4" pivoting silk dome tweeter • 175 watts peak power - , Car Speakers, 5-1, 4" Speakers - Sonic Electronix guys please correct me if i am wrong
thnx jonny, i have seen these for sale here in the uk at all the car audio stores. So if i got those speakers, would i need to get an amp to power them, or would they be ok being powered by my headunit?
i would use this Power Acoustik PS4-300 - 4 ohms: 40 watts x 4 • 2 ohms: 50 watts x 4 • PWM MOSFET power supply • High or low level inputs with floating ground • Tri-Mode capable • S/N ratio: 97 dB • Frequency Response: 10 Hz - 30,000 Hz - , Car Amplifiers, Multi-cha maybe wired with this DHD NTX-5570 - 8 Gauge Single Amp Installation Kit • 20' 8 AWG Power Wire • 4' 8 AWG Ground Wire • 20' 16 AWG Remote Lead • 20' Twisted Pair RCA Cable • 20' 12 AWG Speaker Wire • 6' Split Loom Tubing • 60A AGU Fuse and In-Line Holder • Mounting Screw
ok thanks, so how does the matching the speakers to the amp work exactly? say for these Alpine SPS-13C2 - 5-1/4" 2-way speakers • aluminum-coated polypropylene woofer • rubber surround • 3/4" pivoting silk dome tweeter • 175 watts peak power - , Car Speakers, 5-1, 4" Speakers - Sonic Electronix what figure would you look at to match it up with an amp?
so on an amp would you look at peak output and compare that to peak output of speakers? eg A 300w amp with 2 channels would be suited to 2 speakers that have an output of 150w each?
peak output means NOTHING. the power you want to look at is CONTINUOUS or RMS output. Also you must look at quality brands...cheap brands over-inflate the output ratings. To power the speakers using the factory wiring you can run speaker wires from the amp to behind the head unit and splice them to the factory harness. As for looking for an amp to push the speakers...I would look at an amp that can put out more power than your speakers can handle...headroom is good. It will be less likely for your to clip the amp and blow the speakers by cranking it up to get some volume
