I seem to have run into a little problem with my first attempt. The assembly went fine, nice and solid. My problem is how to lay the carpet. My first attempt didnt go so well, I bought some carpet at the local audio store and poured a boatload of gorilla glue on the box, spread it out evenly with a putty knife, carefully laid the carpet and rolled it with a rolling pin so it was nice and smooth. I didnt do the sides only the large flat areas. I went to Vegas for a week and when I came back the carpet was all wrinked and not flat anymore. kind of like it shrank. To get the carpet off i had to use a blowtorch (LOL) then lightly sanded the box. Boy that was really stinky and smelly not to mention creating a ton of smoke. My wife thought the whole thing was really funny. So what do you guys use to lay the carpet and keep it from getting all funky? Also how do you do the sides, do you just fold the carpet down over the side or what?
your first mistake was using gorilla glue and not stuff for carpets. contact cement. ive seen it done and my friend sprayed both sides to be glued.. meaning carpet then box... let it tack up then stretched it out. he overlapped the carpet then cut it to fit.
So its contact cement in a spray can? I have a can of Permatex all purpose spray adhesive. Do you think that will work? an you are so right about the gorilla glue, that stuff dried rock solid, very hard to get off. But I learned from my mistake.
thanks Pedro, ill try it on a small piece of wood first, or ill just go to Pep boys and look around and see what they got.
Any can spray glue will work. Work the carpet over the edges and overlap the carpet (do not glue to the edge of the next piece of carpet). A sharp straight edge... cut both pieces of carpet at the same time to make a clean nice seam.
