I just upgraded my subs, from 2 autotek street machine 12's to the kicker l7 10's. I also got another amp, 600 watt insignia amp, bridged. The thing is, the subs are in two small individual boxes. 10 inches deep, 12 inches wide. I personally think the boxes are too small, plus they're home made. I also know my amp is too small, but how should I tune it? Thanks again for you help.
boxes are like cooking, the home made ones are the best (if you know what you're doing) lol. but yeah im pretty sure your amp isnt pushing those l7s to their max rms. just dont crank the gain, you'll end up getting a clipped signal, hurting your sub
so how far should i put the gain and hz up to? I heard it was ok to turn the gain all the way up since the amp was small. and i forgot to mention the boxes are sealed.
I say turn bass boost off (that can cause clipping and you don't want that), and set the frequency up to 100, thats what I get the best bang from on any setup i've ever done.
i set mine around 80hz and im pretty sure you shouldnt set the gains all the way up because thats going to give you a clipped signal. the purpose of setting gains is to match the signal from your rcas, it isnt a volume knob
Kvo is right. And since you have those subs in a sealed box make sure your subsonic (if you have one) is turned off.
How about filling the boxes with cotton. Heard that will make them hit harder? And what would be a good size ported box to build? Sorry I'm new to car audio. What is clipping?
check the rec. specs on them. but usually for 12s, they would take 1.5-2.5 cu ft, depending on your sub.
Here is what i would do.... Turn loudness off....Turn bass (and all other eq) to zero...that is not boosted or cut just flat...if the thing has a bass boost turn it off....Set your gain all the way down...Put in a good quality CD and start turning your head unit up...If you can go all the way to full volume, then your signal is clean all the way up...if it gets fuzzy 3/4 up, that is where I would set your max volume (system volume).... Now go back and keep playing that CD and boost your gain up on the sub amp, little by little. Eventually the subs will start to sound distorted. At that point back it off untill the sub is clean again and leave it there...use eq only if you absolutely have to...Listen closely for things and try to turn down freq that are too much instead of boosting... if you over gain the amp all you do is drive the sub amp to clipping before the HU clips...The goal is to get them all to break into clipping at the same point, know that point and stay under that point.... Add bass eq and/or bass boost sparingly....
