So I have this amp: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_3001_Memphis-16-MC500D.html and the sub I have is this: http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6978268&CatId=5598 I know I have a good ground to the amp and plenty of power. For some reason when I turn the key and the head unit send the signal, the subwoofer just pops up like its hitting one continuous beat and doesn't make any noise. What could be causing this? I'm fairly certain it's an issue with the amp because I had the sub checked out by a tech at the local stereo shop and it checked out.
Im no expert but sounds like the sub. Not sure what the tech did? The sub is 4 ohm vc rated at 250 w RMS. Ur amp @ 4 ohms is rated 250 w RMS. Memphis amps r underrated. My MTX thunder 500 had a birth cert of 442 watts at 4 ohms RMS. Not the 250 watts the manual listed. But if its not the sub maybe a problem at the head unit signal (RCA)? Or like u said bad amp. Wiring shoukd b straight forward since the sub only has one vc. Positive to positive on amp. Negative to negative on amp. Good luck.
and it worked fine before? or did u just put the amp in? or what... it was working fine then it did this all of a sudden?
Back story: Last year I hooked up this sub to the same amp:http://www.crutchfield.com/S-IacHyacfOE7/p_20610C104/Kicker-10C104.html I had planned on hooking up a pair of them, but needed to save up some more money to build the box myself and in the mean time ran only one. It worked great, powerful lows that rattled the mirrors, etc. So I'm driving to work one day and it just stops hitting and I smell the smoke coming from the back of the car, and I knew it was blown. So after I come home I replace the fuse and turn the gain down about 1/4 of the way and turn the car on to see what happens, and it blows this one instantly. Now I'm ****ed at $160 down the drain and haven't used the amp almost a year now. I want my bump back so I have two of these http://outlet.crutchfield.com/p_500SWE1043/Alpine-SWE-1043.html?cc=02 showing up tomorrow and I don't want to hook them up to this amp unless I can get my throw away sub running correctly on it (see previous post). As for having it tested, the stereo shop tech used an voltmeter on it and then hooked up some speaker wire to the terminals on a cordless drill battery and just tapped the terminals on the sub real fast and it moved up and down. He said as far as he could see it was fine and said I did pretty well for only paying $20 for it.
@ monster, Would a bad RCA signal cause it to just stand up? I can take a video and post it if anyone is confused about what is going on.
Anything is possible. Its cheaper to change out the rca than buy a new amp. Another possibility could b the hu signal at the rca connection? Maybe it crapped out? If not I say amp problem as the subs have been checked.
