Hey, new to the site, and I'm in tge process of learning about car audio equipment. I'm gettin me a new car or truck soon. I'm getting me either a 98 ford expedition or a 00 lincoln Ls. If I get the expedition, I wanna hook up 2 15" audiobahn subs. Each of them have 650rms. Would I need a amp for each sub, or could 1 amp do the job ? My 2nd question is how would I power all that equipment, with the one car battery ? Again, I'm in the learning process... thanks
Welcome... You'll only need one amp for the subs.. They are called class D mono amps. What's your budget for the amp and do you already have the 2 15" audiobahn subs? Are they single voice coil or dual voice coil? 2ohm? 4ohm? AS far a powering it with your electrical, it depends upon what car you'll put it in... I have a Expedition with over 1500 watts RMS pumping to it. my only upgrade is the big 3 and i'm using all 1/0 gauge wires for my power and ground wires. So, to answer your question, if you get an expedition you won't have to do much with the electrical at all. You can run it off the stock battery and stock alternator.
I don't have the subs yet, but I know which ones I'm goin to buy tho... I'm not sure about ohms... I don't even know what that means... my budget if I only need 1 amp would be 150-200... I'm trying to get something as cheap as possible, maybe off ebay or craigslist...
ok, if you don't have the subs yet then don't get audiobahn... they aren't good subs... as far as understanding the different ohm load, the best way for you to understand is i guess this way... subs come in a few ways, the most come are single voice coil and dual voice coil.. single voice coil would just have one set of terminals + & - while dual voice coil would have 2 sets of + & - terminals. dual voice coil subs are more sought after so i would go with them... Now, an amp would have different rating of power depending on the load... most amps are rated by 4 ohms, 2ohms then 1 ohm.. When you buy 2 subs and they are dual voice coil 4 ohm then you can wire them to the amp at a 1ohm load. When you but 2 subs that are dual voice coil 2ohm subs then your final load would be at a 2ohm load... I know it's confusing at first and it took me a while to understand it at first but here are a few sub wiring diagrams to help you out. you can also go here and toy around with here so you can have a better understanding of it.. http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/woofer_configurations.asp
for amps, you can look at brands like power acoustik, Hifonics and Crunch. there are others but i'm sure others will chime in here. but 150-200 for an amp is very possible... what's your budget for subs? if you want some decent subs you may want to look at kicker cvr's, hifonics subs are pretty cheap, not sure about their 15's but their 12's are really cheap and solid... you can also look at powerbass subs... let us know what your budget for subs are as well and i'm sure we can find something for ya that you'll be happy with.
welcome to the site. 150 to 200 can be done just dont expect ear shattering bass, but with 2 15's it will get nice and loud. CC was right. look at the brands he mentioned, but dont forget to include the wiring for said amp/s either. a good kit can cost upwards of 50+ plus dollars. so you may want to either save a lil bit more or go with one sub and a good 500 watt amp for it. i run one 15 on 245 watts now( was a lot more. i just changed it up for now) and it get plenty loud for now.
ok, thanks for the feedback. i've been googling audiobahn subs for the past week, and alot of people give them bad feedback, what's the reason ? i used to have me a 15" audiobahn sub with like 500 or 550rms(i forgot how much exactly) in my 98 cherokee laredo, and i was very satisfied.the bass was crazy(atleast to my ears). i also had 2 10" audiobahn subs in my escort, and they banged pretty good. i listen to mostly rap music, so i assume that different subs fit different types of music. i heard kickers are good subs. i would like to spend like 600 or 700 on the entire system. again, i appreciate the feedback
i found a good kit for $27 from KnuKonceptz http://www.knukonceptz.com/productDetail.cfm?prodID=KLM-K4
How do I figure out what gauge wires I need ? And if I'm lookin for a amp, should I look for one with around the same rms as the subs ? For instance, to run 2 subs with 1200 rms combined, should I get 1 amp with around 1200 rms watts also ?
well, again that would depend on the subs that you get. I explained it in post #4. so if you have 2 4ohm DVC subs then yes, you'll want to find an amp that will do 1200 watts RMS at 1ohm... if you have 2 2ohm DVC subs then you'll want to find an amp that does 1200 watts RMS at 2ohms. well, if you're gonna run over 1000watts, i would suggest at least 2 gauge wires.. If you can afford it then get 1/0 ga. wires.
ok, cool. i think i'm kinda understanding the ohm stuff, so i'm going to check around on the net and see what i find. Cullen, when u installed your system, did u have 3rd row seating ? i wanna take replace the 2nd row seats with the 3rd row seats... would that even be possible ?
I did kinda like have a third row seating before. Mine is a Philippine version so there were two seats facing eachother so i took them out to make way for my box. I've seen the 3rd row seating though and i wouldnt recommend replacing the 2nd row with the 3rd row. It's way too low. the 3rd row seats are only about 5 or 6 inches from the floor so if you do that then you passengers in the 2nd row will look like midgets. lol I would leave the 2nd row in and just take out the 3rd row to make way for your system...
ok. i thought the 2nd row seats were 2 seperate seats... idk... but i looked for some amps here's what i found... http://vi.ebaydesc.com/ws/eBayISAPI...&seller=vminnovations&category=18795&caz.html http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-4000-WATT-L...iers?hash=item35a1bb9381&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 those amps for 2 of these subs... http://vi.ebaydesc.com/ws/eBayISAPI...eller=deals4powerbuys&category=18805&caz.html like i said before, i loved the 15" audiobahn i had before... i looked for some hifonics subs last night, they seem to be in a reasonable price range.... they were 12" tho. would there be anyway for me to figure out how hard they pound, like somethin specific to look for when i'm reading the description ? thanks again everyone, u guys r really helpin me out alot
oh, ok... sorry about that... i wasn't aware that they had to be approved... u can delete my last 2 posts if u want(this one and the one after the links)
ok, just some advice... don't look at boss, lanzar or any real cheap crap amps. They don't put out rated power... Planet Audio, Power Acoustik, Hifonics, Crunch and powerbass are decent amps that don't cost so much so if you want some amps that won't break the bank you should look at them.
it depends upon the model. But mine is a 2001 model. I don't know which model you are buying. mine has a bench seat for the 2nd row. I have heard that some come with captains seats for the 2nd row with a arm rest in the middle but i haven't seen it. I have seen it in the Navigator though.
