I have a 160GB western digital ext hd that i want to use with my head unit. i understand that the hd has to be in FAT32 and i am guessing the partitions cant be larger that 32GB.

So can i make like 5 partitions that are 32GB each, and have this work with this head unit?

I tried this and had no luck, all i got was no device connected.

Does the USB have input on the hu have enough power to power an external hard drive?

Or am i going wrong somewhere else?

I tried one 32GB partition and the rest of the drive unallocated....still no luck.

If it doesn't support NTFS file system, I guess it's hardly going to handle multiple partitions on a single hard disk. Creating more partitions actually means the device 'acts' like several physical HDDs, while those head units are designed for only one single USB device; most likely flash disks no larger than 32GB. Magnetic hard disks also have a higher power consumption due to the moving parts inside, compared to a flashdisk.
