I just bought an Alpine type-r 12" sub. It will be wired for 2 ohms. Would the MTX 801D be a good match for this sub??

    About 1.0 cubes.

That is fine for that sub...min is about .7ft cubed

What car is this goin in?

First test the sub just in the enclosure...then try stuffing polyfill in the box and see if you like the sound difference.

Personally I think the newer type r's sound better in a bigger box than 1 ft^3.

I just come across a viper 1200.1 refurb for about $225. Do you think this will be overkill (800 watts @ 2 ohms)??Should I just stick with the mtx801d??

Nah that's not overkill...actually it'd be better cuz you wouldn't be trying to push the amp and it'd run cooler...go for it.

Even though the sub is rated for 500 watts and the amp is rated for 800 watts?? I just don't want to kill the sub and I don't want the bass to be too overpowering (I don't listen to a lot of rap music).

300 more rms is nothing if you set your gains correctly and dont turn the bass boost on...Don't worry about it.

It's even better cuz you can upgrade to two 12's later on if you want.
