More of the same, but different...

I need box building help (more of the same). I have two 12" Pioneer TS-SW3041D shallow mount subs (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Products/CarAudioVideo/Subwoofers/Shallow/TS-SW3041D). I have a 2007 GMC Yukon XL. I have 5 kids, and travel a lot, so I don't want to just throw a box or two in the back. Ideally, I would like to build a wood floor or something in the back (the different), to mount my subs in. That way I can still stack groceries and luggage and such in the back. UI would want to recess the subs in the enclosure/floor, so that I can pack over them when needed (and fab a grate or the like to cover the subs) Any ideas?

lift up the carpet in the rear hatch area and see whats under it, you will either need to cut into or build the whole area upward (easier).

Why would I need to cut into the back of the truck? Could I make a box the whole width and length of the back of my SUV, so that the box acts as a false floor and the whole rear is level?

Thats what I mean by building upward.

ok, thanks. What would be the issue caused by leaving more space than reccomended in the specs (0.5 ~ 1.0 cu ft per sub)? Would/should I make size appropriate compartments within the big box?

I don't really like the stealth boxes. I use the center console way too much to give up that storage space. I originally wanted to mount them in the rear side panels, but didn't think that the plastic sides were strong enough to mount the subs to, and that using that space would rattle the truck too bad. If you have done this or know someone tht has done this, please let me know how.

well if I were you I would build the box using the recommended specs for the subs, then just build a platform to take up the rest of the space behind the box and maybe mount your amp down there, then upholster a sheet of mdf and put over the box and the other platform?

you can build behind them. i wouldnt mount a sub to them.

Soooo...Build a box to reccomended specs that will fit behind the rear side panels, and then place the box there?

yes. i want to say mtx and other companies have made boxes that fit in the dead space in big trucks like yours.

you will how ever need to deaden the panels to reduce the rattles that they will make. maybe some foam or poly fill stuffed around the outside of the box so the panel fits nice and tight around it.

that way you have all your hatch space.

you can also still build a false floor for your amps back there.
