i got a 1997 Mecury Cougar XR7 with the 4.6L SOHC the list of mods that i will get done by january or february: FlowMaster or Dynomax Cat-back Exhaust high-flow catalytic converters new O2 sensors JBA headers K&N cone in the fender wall for cold-air induction transmission cooler transmission rebuild larger MAF sensor (not sure what size yet) larger throttle body (not sure what size yet) 190 lph fuel pump 30# injectors high-flow resonator custom burned chip from Fordchip what approx. HP and TQ will i be getting at the rear wheels? eventually i'll probably get my heads ported and polished for more airflow, and get forged rods, pistons, and upgraded valves........also what other mods will go hand in hand with the ones i mentioned?
Welcome aboard GM!!! Glad to see you took my advice and came over here. I will answer this tonight at home
I cant answer your question but I love my t-bird I am waiting on my 3.8L to die so I can put a 5.0 in, but this motor will not die........... I know sandt will have many comments on fords, but he is just jealous
yea i had a 93 XR7 3.8L and it would not give up as well.....it had about 120k miles on it......the i had the trans worked on, but not rebuil, cuz it was giving in......suspension was giving out.....took her to the track and wailed on the throttle........i guess my 3.8 came out pretty good.......hehe......so a 5.0 swap was not in the future of that car, so i got the '97 4.6L Sport XR7 this summer........i like the styling better on the '96 and '97, especially when i get some Xenon ground effects....
Well, everybody has their weakness. Ford's weakness are GMs, Mopars, Hondas, Kias, Suzukis... Well, you get the picture Thos are some well chosen mods. Maybe a gain of 75Hp, tops with similar torque gains. Hard to say for sure, but a fair rough guess. I might suggest going with the Whipple low profile supercharger. I've been in some Crustangs with them, and they are pretty nice (still slower than my little V6, but not too bad  ) If I am not too badly mistaken those XR7s come with factory headers right? The headers are really tuned well on Fords. In fact, I have heard of people putting aftermarket headers and LOSING power. Just something to think about .
well i'm pretty sure my stock XR7 can smoke most stock Kias out there..... last time i checked, no factory headers.........so Whipple makes one specifically for Cougars/T-Birds? i was under the impression that a S.C. has to be engineered for that vehicle model.......cuz i'm pretty sure the stock 4.6 SOHC from the 97 Mustang can put out more HP and TQ than the one my car, of the same year, came with, but then again i could be mistaken
Well, I'm not too sure about that J/K It is engine specific, not vehicle really. It is the same engine. Most likely the increases are due to intake and exhaust tuning. You will eliminmate the intake (thereby slightly evening out the odds) and are planning an exhaust upgrade (completeing the power correction). May be some trans or rear gearing issues as well to help the Stangs along, but not a huge differance. Hey, if you go the Whipple route, you may be able to beat a Kia    J/K It's all in fun
so how would the Whipple srew-type SC compare to the Eaton M90 roots-blower kit offered by www.allenengine.com? which do you think will be a better value for the money? as in better price/performance ratio? also which would be better for no-holds-barred performance?
As far as out and out performance, I wouldn't really want to venture a guess. I suggested The Whipple because of reliability and clean stock appearance. They just look like they belong under the hood . I'm with Mike here. I used to enjoy racing the 5.0s, but the 4.6s aren't worth my gas . Put a blower on it, keep your oil changed, and I suggest synthetic. I have seen numerous 4.6s locking camshafts up snapping the timing gears right off the front of the cam!!!
well when i said no holds barred performance, i meant using the same engine, albeit with better, forged, internals.....i mean of course i'd love a Cobra DOHC with a blower on it, but that's not gonna happen anytime soon.......well no SC is gonna happen anytime soon, so i was i was just curious........i'm still just gonna stick to the mods i listed .......any other mods that would complement the ones i plan to do?
For performance.....buy a nice chevy and give that ford engine a nice burial. No joke...I live next to the Atchafalaya River in south Louisiana. When we run trot lines in the river...we used 6 of ford cylinder heads as anchors. We finally found something a ford is good for :gives:
yea right.....you'll have as much of a chance of getting me to ditch ford for chevy, as i have of getting you to ditch chevy for ford..........we're just on opposite sides of the spectrum
There are none so blind as those who will not see [/b][/quote] keep in mind, i didn't buy my car for performance, i bought it cuz i liked the car in general..........now i just decided i want some performance out of it.........if i wanted all out performance in the absolute sense, i would have bought a pure bred sports car........i'm 9/10 audio enthusiast, and 1/10 performance enthusiast.........i think you guys have misunderstood the whole thing when it comes to me wanting performance out of my car
yea it's cool, but y'all double-teamed me!! that aint fair! well neither is the new Ford 425 HP, 5.0L, 4V, DOHC "Cammer" engine to be unveiled in 2003 on all you're GM-punk a$$es! hehe
