Mids + highs wiring dilemma

First off, just out of curiosity, why is it, you can buy subwoofers (and of course small subs, like 8", to be used as mid-base speakers) in either 4ohm, 2ohm, or dual voice coil models > all day long ?
But try finding a midrange and / or tweeters, or mid + high coaxials, that have either a 2 ohm rating, or dual voice coils ! I sure haven't found any !

And this begs the question; Do speaker companies "assume" that because it's 'only' a midrange speaker, you won't want to get more juice out of your amplifier for it ???

    Urggggg !

I want a 'balanced' system. I'll be getting my RF '25 to life' 5 ch amp next week, and I intend to use the mono sub channel with two 4 ohm subs, for a 2 ohm load. Two more of the smaller channels will be used for two 2ohm, 8" subs (to be used as midbass drivers) and so everything is still all running at 2 ohms.

But then we get to the mids and highs :-( So how do I make 2 ohms for the last two channels, for my mids + highs ? ....because unless I can work this out, I'll only get 50 watts {well, probably like 75) to each side for mids and tweets. Where with a 2 ohm load, I'll be able to pump out 100 to 150 watts per side, of mids + highs. I REALLY like that idea.
I know lots of guys wouldn't care one way or the other, about the wattage to their mids + highs..... But like I say, I want lots of "music" too, along with my boom.......

How to go about this ? BTW, I'm not opposed to running like 4 mid range and 4 tweeters, if this is what it is going to take to end up at 2 ohms for my mids + highs.....
I pretty much "have" to use seperates though, as my tweets just "have" to be up high in my truck (windshield pillars ?) and pointed at my head.

    Any answers or ideas ???

    Thank you,
    Fish

there are some 2 ohm comps out there you just have to look harder. Try Rainbow audio or Soundstream SPL

You guys are awesome !!! :)

    Geeez, I looked, and looked.....

But you gotta' admit, even on the front page of those Sonicelectronic links, it didn't say "2ohm"..... I had to go into the "specs" page to confirm that.

But anyway, I'm glad I asked ! Those Infinity's look like some really nice speakers, and in my price range too !

But hey Boosh, I will go and try to find out if Rainbow or Soundstream make the 2ohm's.... Not sure about Reaudio.... Never heard about them. Any good ?

    Much thanks guys,

    Peace,
    Fish

tell you what. if you want loud mids to go with your bass/midbass. you can look into some horn loaded compression drivers. or HDLC for short.

some are rated as high as 110 db at 1 watt. very loud with little power. so if its loud and clear you want look into some of these. trust me 50 watts at 8 ohms to one of these guys is plenty loud.

    just a thought. good luck

    Hey Pedro....

And an interesting thought, as well. I've always kind of considered the horns as concert type stuff that was in fact, very loud, but not neccessarily that clean..... or able to get those super crisp, clean highs..... but then again, if anybody has ever been to a Genesis, or Rush concert.... whoa !

The other thing (and this might not be correct thinking) but I once looked into those concert style subwoofers (for home audio).... and the manufacturers told me, "These things are rediculously loud, and can take huge power" ! .....but as soon as I started asking about super-low stuff.... like 20hz or lower, they got all stumbled up, and basically said, "These aren't made for super low stuff, or reference home systems, but rather, work best at like 50 or 60hz"..... at which point I was thinking, "50 or 60hz ? I can get enough of that from any old home theater system. It's the 20hz and lower bass, that takes a ton of power, and lots of cone area".

So anyway, I hope I didn't get too far off track, but that's what I think of when I hear horns mentioned....

Again, I could be proven wrong.....

    Peace,
    Fish

    Oh hey CCC.....

    1) I found out that 6 1/2"s are a bit tricky (a little hacking required) to install in my stock speaker spaces in my Ford F150....
and 2) Since I'm going to be running a pair of 8" mid-bass drivers, I was thinking that 5" components would probably be better anyway....

So then, I went and found these :) (still thanks to your original suggestion)

    http://sonicelectronix.com/item_13968_Infinity+Kappa+50.9cs.html

    2ohms...
    Power handling is perfect....
Tweeters are able to be swiveled....
The price is right in my spending range...

    I think I'm there :)

I was also pleased to discover that my Alpine CDA-9887 has a built in, 3 way X-over.

Heck, my whole system is just about done !

Doh ! I mean > In my head :) Now I just have to buy this stuff.

Hey I wasn't going to say anything, until I could just flat post a photo of it..... but I just ordered my RF '25 to life' amp this evening :) So if a $540 purchase doesn't lock me into this whole venture, I don't know what else would !

Next is the Alpine head unit...

Then alarm system.... just going from the most expensive items to the least.... Hoping to have it all installed / finished by December or so.

    Peace,
    Fish

I have an Expedition and I got 6.5" components in my door with no problems at all. there is a big difference between 5.25's and 6.5's. Believe me, I've had them both.

to mount the 6.5's all you have to do is fabricate a MDF ring, they even sell adapters over the internet.

    Hey Pedro and CCC.....

Thank you Pedro, I will go look at those horns now.

Hey CCC, I totally hear what your saying about the 6 1/2" vs. the 5 1/4"s..... but seeing as I am going to be running a pair of 8" mid-bass drivers too, I will be crossing over the mids pretty high anyway {I'm assuming you mean that the 6 1/2"s can get down deeper}.... probably like 600hz and up.

    I'm thinking my X over points will be like;

    subs - 60hz and down
    mid-bass - 60hz to 600hz
    mid + tweets - 600hz and up {mids and tweets crossed at whatever the factory preset is.... or is that adjustable with the Infinities ?}

    Anyway, pretty anxious....

    Peace,
    Fish

you can get good mid bass by deadening your doors well. i did mine and got good results. i need a little more to really get a good seal.
