I didn't even click the link, I know exactly what you are talking about.
    That's their flagship sub.

    Why?
My guess is simply linearity - which seems a tad silly, IMO.
But anyway, by having the spiders spaced THAT far apart, you are really ensuring stability, so that nothing can set the cone unit into a rocking motion.
But - it's really unnecessary even on single spider subs, and dual spider subs with even a slight gap between them can improve on what's already unnecessary...
Not to mention, with such a massively long voice coil former (and everything else attached), that must make for one hell of a heavy moving mass, and therefore just kill off efficiency.

Of course, the ironic part about that would be that this is likely a small-box sub. :p

Mounting depth on that sucker probably negates what most would consider "a small box". I have a Memphis dealer about 5 minutes up the street. In fact, Memphis and Diamond are the only mid level to high end stuff they carry. When I first saw this sub, from afar, I thought it was a 15" sub stacked atop a 12" atop a 10"...and it was there to show off the orange basket. It's weird that Memphis makes some very elegant looking amps but has some decidedly macho looking subs.

It's always fun to see some of the weird things well known companies do to seperate themselves from the competition. Whether it's square/triangle subs, chrome amps with flames, or this weird thing from Memphis.
