alright guys heres the deal, a buddy of mine is in a competition with his friend. The objective is to have the loudest SPL wise sound system with a single sub. The limit is $1k. His competitor already has a BL 15" D2 powered with a hifonics xx. So lets hear your opinions!
anyways it all boils down to box design. i saw a guy with 4 18's get his ass handed to him by 2 10's and with half the power. the guy with the 18's couldnt understand it. his spl #'s were 145's and the 10's did 147's.
i know the whole enclosure deal, i'll be building him a custom a one. He also needs a HU. I was thinking a cheaper pioneer.

You are concentrating on the least important things. 100% right!!!!! Enclosure is 95%, only 5% is product. Concentrate on the enclosure.
I understand the whole box thing perfectly, I just figure that sure u can have cheap equipment in a nice setup and have it be loud, but if you have nicer equipment in a nice setup wouldn't it be louder?
Almost never. Here is why. To be loud we need to move air with some intensity. A 12-inch speaker only has so much surface area that it can used to move air. And all 12-inch speakers, regardless of brand have about the same surface area. Now this point is up for debate. "More excursion is always better". Maybe. As excursion increases the suspension size also increases. As the suspension size increases the speaker cone area decreses, less surface area. The reverse is also true. So do we want a woofer with a high Xmax or not. Also high excursion woofers need alot more power to move the woofer peak to peak. Again this is up for debate. The only reason to buy a more expensive woofer is that it has a solid cone area and it can handle alot of power. Obviously a $19.95 12-inch woofer will not survive 1000-watts RMS.
ahh but a 25 dollar 12 inch speaker can handle a 1200 watt rms burp for a couple seconds before frying...the EHQS 12 from elemental designs. acually i plugged my ehqs 12 into the wall socket...4 ohm sub using voltage squared divided by resistance equals power i was giving it roughly 3000 watts rms on a 60hz tone...took it for about 10 seconds before frying. it was in a 1 cu ft box tuned to 30hz lol
Isn't that a ford taurus haha, what kind of amps are those, i see them from time to time, with the nice wire mesh tops. Ebay? lol
