    Hello All:
I just getting back into my car audio, and I am in the market for some new subs. I had two JL-Audio W1 fifteen inch subs in my last car, but I sold them. I love JL, and they were so impressive for the low end JL (the W1 is Now the W0) yet even for low end, they still run 100bucks a pop for a 10inch. Does anyone have a Sub Model in mind that they own or have tested that is in the 40-50 a piece (for a 10inch) that they were impressed by? I am looking more for SQ, and I am not competing, so SPL isnt my bag, yet I still want to hear them get pretty low when neccessary for my electronica music, and i want them to be tight for my jazz and metal. Some brands that were cheap that actually got some good reviews (from people that competed or owned car stereo shops) were Pioneer, Power Acoustik, and MTX (not the dreaded paper real low end Road Thunders) Boss actually got some good reviews considering how cheap they are (like 20bucks a pop for a 10inch) Wattage isn't important. I ran my JL's over the limit of the handling capicity,(100Watts) and they never blew or popped in the eight years I had them. I have a Autotek (dont think they are around anymore) SS.400 (400x1) which a few years ago was rated a very clean amp for the price. We all know distortion kills speakers, not power. I also understand the box is very important as I will have it custom built (sealed) to the specs of the speaker, but I dont think anything will sound good just cause the box is great, I think it helps, but if it was that easy, we would all buy 20dollar, flea market subs. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks for reading this long post

Well I would say the AA Assassin would be the best but they are currently not for sale while the company undergoes some changes. So I really think the JBL GTO or Infinity Reference subs would work best for a cheap solution.

I have an old school JL 12W6....sounds awesome with all kinds of music.

The old JL subs were pretty underrated...I had a 15W4 that was rated at 200 watts rms and I gave it 600 all day in a 4.3 cu ft ported box tuned to 40hz

Power does kill speakers...so does distorted power

I will look into the Infinities...Thanks..Has anyone has experience with Power Acoustik, Boss, MTX, or Volfenberg. There arent many reviews for 10inch model or lower end stuff of these brands (except for the lowest end MTX road thunder which got horrid reviews) AND...instead of Posting new topic, how bout a quick enclosure question. Since I listen to so many types of music, mostly rock, wouldnt I be better off with a sealed box. I have always had ported boxes, but even with the bass turned down, they seemed to roll a bit more. Great for hip hop and electronica, annoying for rock and jazz.

I use PowerBass in my Sons car. He beats them to death and so far, not one problem. These things are tough and well made. I would have no problem comparing them with JL, infinity or even JBL as far as quality and performance goes. The "S" series woofers (their base model) are really tough

I would still recommend a ported enclosure. Are you using a premade ported box? Their performance is made for selling, not performance.

Generally speaking, a good ported box for 2 12s or 2 10s will be about 3 to 3-1/2 cu ft, tuned between 35 and 40 Hz (depending on woofer selection).

Pre-mades divide the enclosure between the 2 woofers. The smaller enclosure makes for horrible performance, there is no range. They work well within a small range. The larger enclosure will dramatically increase the range that the woofers will work in. I have always found that two woofers in a single enclosure will easily outperform two enclosures that are half the size.

PowerBass are Cheap but well made

yeah it finally died...not my fault though...both tinsel leads were broken right in the middle of the lead....so I fixed it and it pounded away in the ported box that controlled to cone movement very well.

Then I put it in a sealed box and the excursion snapped the tinsel lead right where it goes into the cone...NOT where I fixed it. It was just old and beat up lol but for the time it lasted it took more than 3 times the rated power handling no problem at all
