to hell with windows... I am so sick of windows...... Ihave several operating systems on my PC....3 versions of linux and one of XPee. Now heres my dilema...I need to run my sprint wireless usb modem on a version of linux...I downloaded the latest ubunto kernal...and it runs fine on this old machine ( i built it 10 years ago) just need it to recognize and run a wireless modem from sprint....any help here would be AWESOME!
actually..on a regular internet connection, it works flawless..done it years ago...as a matter of fact all ,u old posts were done on a linux OS. Just the fact that having a windows based modem run on a linux kernal is a bit difficult...found some info and gunna work on it tomorrow...
We should accept the fact that Windows is very user friendly although just like you, I hate Microsoft's attitude of dominating the market but if your USB will run on Windows, then go for it.
Linux rocks, dude, even if you have to play with some of the stuff for way to long!! Use a REAL Linux distro though and not that bloated Ubuntu crap!!
then which distro do you reccomend for running a sierra 250u through sprint? Cause I still aint got it working....Tried a few forms of Ubunto, Mint, DSL, aint tried suse yet....whaddya think?
A couple of my personal favorites are these 2: Zenwalk http://www.zenwalk.org/ Blag - This one has been down for a while, but seems to be back up and running. http://www.blagblagblag.org/ Hmm, Hard to believe you can't get it working, if it's supported, using Mint. That's an awesome distro also. If you're more into the major distro's, try Slackware: http://www.slackware.com/
Ok, The Viking here...had to log in under my old name. Finally got this Ubunto OS to accept my sierra wireless modem. Downloaded the latest version of Ubunto 10.10 , Plugged in the modem, a few clicks later and wham! It worked. As a matter of fact, things run so much better and faster than it does under windows. Its quite amazing really. Now i will have to go reboot under windows and log out of my other account and relogin under this OS to get back to my correct account...did that make any sense? LOL! Hopefully it works right! Ranger...might need your help if things go awry!!!! Will email you if all goes to heck!
He HE!!!! I am very happy now! Running under linux and seem to have all my issues dealt with! Feels so much better knowing I am away from windows! Now...I need to get that box program to work....next on the list
just thought i would bring this up again.... installed a second Hard drive.. now running this old 60 gig HD only on linux ubunto 10.10 WOW! makes this machine run like a new one! Keep in mind that I built this PC 10 years ago. It has a 1.8 athlon xp with an antiquated nvidea graphics card on a 4x slot ...... oh and only about 750 ram.... this machine runs faster than the current version of windows! And i have the darned desktop cranked up For craps and grins.....the other hight I opened up about 50 programs......they all ran great with very little lag in the process of them.... I love this OS!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
I love windows 7. idle ram usage is about 25% of my 4 gigs. With vista idle was about 44%. Also it loads up so much faster and smoother. I go from off to browsing the web in less than a couple minutes...hell with vista the desktop would appear and nothing would happen for a couple minutes...just sh!t loading.
I will have to time mine....but from off to on the web in about 30-40 seconds. Ands that with a wireless modem. Might try ubunto on a new machine azn.....see how much faster and more efficient it runs!
