Ah the topic that seems to get the attention of all. Ported vs. Sealed enclosers. I have read many articles of what people seem to prefer, and how to get the most "peformance" out of the sub, but I cant seem to find any on what to choose on what type of music you listen to. I listen to a wide range of music. I prefer Rock and Metal, but still like Hip-Hop and Electronica, as well as jazz. I have always had ported enclosures that were custom made (never owned pre made) and always had them built to the specs of the speakers and my car. I had always liked the sound they delivered when it came to hip-hop and electronica, and I like to feel the low end. However, when it comes to rock and jazz, the bass always seemed to roll a bit, (even with the bass turned down and everything crossed over at the right spot) This could have been the fact that I always had used two JL audio 15's, and those things are beast. I am once again in the market for two subs and an encloser, and I could use some advice of what I should go with. Ported or Sealed. I am looking into two 10's this time, as I am getting older and the 15's were mind blowing. 10's should be just fine. I was thinking using sealed this time because I heard the bass was tighter and cleaner and I heard its better for rock (even though I still want some good bottom end for my Hip Hop). Does anyone prefer the sealed sound to ported, and since I am looking for SQ, is Sealed the prefered choice? Let the debates begin!

The sound from the speaker depends on the enclosure...just building abox to manufacturers spec is just getting into the ballpark for all around sound.

Ported can sound just as tight as sealed if built correctly and have just as good sound quality.

I am a ported always guy...I hate sealed boxes. I like big boxes with big port area

    My rule of thumb is

    Rap = ported

Rock and everything else = sealed.

I love the sound of a big tight sealed box. But when I'm listening to gansta rap. i want my bass to hit lower. thus the ported box sounds lower.

you can easily get SQ out of ported box by running the minimum space in the range of box sizes recommended.

I got a jl 12w7 in a High output JL box and it's vented. Huge vent the size of the length of the box.

Even though its more of an SPL type box. The sound quality is still better than anything else I've ever had.

I am a very critical listener.

in all my years of home and car audio, i have found that a vented encolsure tends to yield the best results. Whether it is boom boom bass crap, or the tighest rock tracks.

Most live performances i have encounteered have used a vented design in the sub bass application. I translate this very sound into the equation to an extent. With the transfer function of said vehicle, i find that the properly constructed vented box yeilds a superior sound to a sealed box.

It has been my personal experience that even home audio systems benefit from a vented design...whether it is a port, aperiodic, or a passive radiator, the end result is faster attack and more accurate sound.

Again, the enclosure must be properly built for optimimum performance.

now a sealed design...they can sound very good also.....but not my cup of tea...or even mug of beer.....

I always recommend ported. Ported got a bad rap because of bad designs. Many premades are to small, which makes them peaky or one note wonders. The only time I consider sealed is if the vehicle cabin in small (like my Standard Cab Ranger) or if space is a major concern.

Some manufactures even recommend boxes a little on the small side to make the box appealling to more customers. Bad strategy. Manufactures need to be realistic. Ported can be made to hit tight and very accurate. Its all in the build.

    Very true Ranger

The advent of the mass produced vented box come into play years ago and has not recovered from its bad wrap since......

Granted, the most you can expect from a prefab vented box is nothing in the way of any SQ.....Where as a sealed box will generally sound better due to the fact that the driver can accept the limitaions better.

The utilization of the back wave of the driver is key in keeping up with efficiency and the demands of the high dynamics of the digital medims we use today. Even if it a cpompressed medium such as MP files...

The use of a vented box allows our sytems to excell in deep bass, and in a manner that is typical of accuracy....IF it is bult correct..

We need to sit down at a local bar Ranger and have one or two beers....i will buy....

Too bad I dont drink, I attend a Christian University that prohibits alcohol consumption, so I don't plan to start either.

Anyway I'm an "ex" alcoholic, so I wouldnt drink anyway. Clean and sober since Janruary 1988

But I can still sit at the bar with my coffee and be the designated driver.

well in ABOUT a month I will be able to debate in this thread. I'm buying a Sealed box, till I get my ported box built. Then I will be able to tell and say what i like best. I had gone from ported to sealed (both prefab) and I couldnt hear it but other people could hear the air noise I did like the sealed box though but this ported box is supposed to be very good and show most of the potential of the kicker L7s.
